Home &away

With the unpredictable Summer weather, it’s easy to get caught off guard when it comes to Summer skin care.

“When the weather improves, days are longer with hours upon hours of light, warmer temperatures occur and people want to be more active outdoors after a long Winter of hibernation, [but] just as our wardrobe changes from Winter to Summer, so should our skin care,” advises Virginie Claire of Virginie Claire Products Ltd.

“The problem with our climate is that for eight months, we live in darkness and rain and tend to be indoors more often than not. Cue a belter of a day and everyone is out in their shorts with no sun protection factor. Recipe for disaster! Not only have we been in hibernation, but so has our melanin, the pigment responsible for the protection and tanning of our skin. When it’s shocked with such a blast, there is no time for its protection from skin burning. This is why we must be sensible, as wise as we would be on holidays in a hotter climate!

“SPFs are not just to stop [your clients] looking like a tomato: they prevent unnecessary free radical damage which cause premature ageing (UVA degenerates our connective tissue) and they reduce the amount of uneven pigmentation and brown spots occurring (UVB rays). This is why it is so important that your [clients’] SPF contains protection against both,” Virginie adds.

“It is also a good time of year to introduce a serum to your current routine as with the change of season comes changes to the skin – dehydration, sensitivity etc. Serums often get forgotten but they are a great tonic to the skin due to their intense and active ingredients – a bit like a vitamin boost. There are many serums available depending upon skin type or concern but they are a great addition to a skin care routine to feed the skin nutrients and promote radiance and vitality,” suggests Marie-Louise Coster of All About Mi Beauty and Training.

44 Out with the old…

Of course, introducing serums and additional layers of SPF is all well and good as long as it is combined with regular exfoliation treatment to remove the old, dead skin that has collected on the epidermis over the cooler months.

“During the Summer months, it is wise to introduce an extra layer under your day time protection to use for one month, morning and evening, to help the skin adjust to the challenges made on it. I also recommend regular exfoliation, in fact twice a week to slough off dead skin cells as this will keep the skin responding and functioning at its peak. It certainly helps to keep the Summer glow and prevents the skin from looking dry and depleted,” remarks Noella Gabriel, Director of Product and Treatment Development for Elemis.

“Here at Sothys, we recommend a layering approach to skin care. As our moisturisers are treatment creams for maximum protection we recommend layering an additional SPF shield such as our SPF 50 high protection face fluid on a daily basis to protect against UVA, UVB and Infrared damage to the skin,” comments Danielle Drury of Sothys.

“To avoid breakouts, regular exfoliation and a good cleansing routine is key. This will ensure all particles of pollution and product build-up are removed and will ensure the skin is clean and smooth as well as ensuring an even, long lasting tan.

“Aftercare is also vitally important to not only maintain and rehydrate the skin but to replenish and restore the skin, improve cell renewal and repair any damage caused by the sun. Soothing, rehydrating masks can also calm over-exposed skin and investing in a good hydrating treatment such a serum will also treat and repair damaged, dehydrated skins,” adds Danielle.

In with the new!

To ensure your clients really are continuing the good work at home, it’s absolutely vital that you assess their skin on a regular basis and offer home care advice after every treatment.

Carrying out regular skin assessments on your clients during their usual facials will help to keep their skin in tip-top condition over the Summer.

“Every time your client comes in for her / his facial, or to buy their products, it is essential that you take a fresh look at their skin and ask them some consultation questions to confirm whether their current product is still the best product for them,” advises Marie- Louise.

As a final tip, Marie-Louise suggests: “Invite your clients in for a skin care review with the changing seasons to address their changing skin and concerns – offer this as a free service which will show a great level of customer service on your part.”
