Gray and Ductile Iron Treatment

Post-furnace gray iron is normally either tapped into a

ladle and subsequently cast or, especially in high volume foundries, taken from the melting unit to a holding furnace. A critical issue in holding metal is ensuring nucleation levels do not fall, leaving “dead” iron. Te use of Preseed precon- ditioner during melting (or in the case of cupola melting, as the metal enters the holding furnace) will ensure nuclei last a long time with very little fade. For ductile iron, the selection of the right nodularizer is critical. Te use of MgFeSi alloys is the optimum means for magnesium recovery, nucleation and flexibility, particularly as every foundry is different in terms of raw materials, melting conditions, ladle design, temperatures, molding media and casting modulus. A MgFeSi treatment alloy needs to be selected to suit these

criteria. Elkem produces more than 100 different chemistries of alloy to suit these variables. Te Lamet nodularizer range, for example, has both in-the-mold alloys and ladle-grade alloys. Te current trend in iron casting facilities is to use low Mg containing Lamet alloys with an effective cover material, such as Topseed to maximize Mg recovery with low reactivity. Lamet nodularizer is specially designed to minimize shrinkage. Te low reactivity means the nodularization process has

only a small effect on nucleation leading to more stable iron with higher levels of nuclei. Tis makes the iron more respon- sive to inoculation and less prone to shrinkage. For more information, contact your local Elkem representa- tive or visit www.elkem.com/foundry. 

torsk, Ukraine, specializes in casting very large, heavy and complex components. Considering the high value of the castings, they are subject to comprehensive quality controls including the specified surface cleanliness. For this reason, castings with dimensions up to 40 x 23 x 16 ft. (12 x 7x 5m) and weights up to 250 metric tons can undergo an intensive blast cleaning process. Te new blast cleaning system, one of the biggest shot blast machines in the world, was designed by Rösler Oberflächentechnik GmbH, Untermerzbach, Germany, to fit precisely into the available space at the customer’s premises. EMSS’s iron and steel casting facilities have been manu-

facturing castings and forgings for the heavy, energy gener- ating and nuclear industries as well as for marine and traffic engineering since 1964. Te company specializes in com- ponents such as steam and hydro turbine housings, steam turbine rotors, hydro rotors, trusses, ring gears, screw blades and hubs, support rollers for hot and cold rolling mills and die fixing blocks. Because of function, size and weight, these
