It has been almost 30 years since that appointment and I actually need a stronger prescription today than I did to see clearly at a distance. At 52 years of age, I still do not wear glasses to read or look at a computer screen. Apparently, the shape of my natural eyes are trained to see well close-up but I need glasses to see well at a distance. In an interesting twist, my “spiritual eyes” operate exactly opposite from my natural eyes.
So, at the 75th anniversary of our founding, we are grateful for our past and thankful for our present. What do we see in the future? Can we be sure of the future we are seeing? I think the second question is easier to answer. We absolutely cannot be sure of the future! Tat is why “faith is the evidence of things hoped for, yet not seen” (Hebrews 11:6). Moving into the future with boldness always involves an element of risk; our challenge is to make sure that the risks we are taking are because we are clear that our Father is asking us to move into those arenas.

Te past 10 years here in Rocklin and particularly the growth of the past three years have confirmed what many have been laboring for years to birth. We believe that WJU is standing at a “kairos” moment in our history; a Kingdom opportunity that we must not and will not allow to pass us by. We are not content to simply be one more option in the field of Christ-centered higher education. We want to make a profound difference in the world for the cause of Christ. We are passionate and committed to this challenge; we live it out in an integrated fashion through connecting head, hands and heart in all we do. Trough the power of the gospel and for the sake of Christ, we partner with the church to make an impact in ways we are just now beginning to dream.
We are unashamed about our commitments. We believe that students can and should become more spiritually thriving during college. We believe that students can and should receive a quality liberal arts education that equips them to think and behave well as followers of Christ. We believe that our students can and will be exceptionally employable…that a season of learning should be followed by a lifetime of earning!
What could the future look like by 2020? William Jessup University is prayerfully hoping to have 2,500 traditional undergraduate students at our Rocklin campus, 1,000 non-traditional degree completion students studying in centers across Northern California, 500 students in six graduate programs (we are currently offering a Master’s of Teaching and are looking at adding graduate degrees in leadership, business, psychology, education and public administration) and expectantly preparing for 5,000 students taking online courses across our degree platforms.
But numbers of students only tell one part of the story. JESSUP MAGAZINE | 29
In the years ahead, WJU will lead the way in a number of specific dimensions.
Our faculty will be recognized as thought and transformation leaders in their respective disciplines. Arts and Athletic programs will become known across the region and the west coast as excellent and of the highest quality. Media, Technology and Communications will flow from our commitment to engage the community. Our emerging partnerships in the areas of ministry, business, education, healthcare and public policy will position Jessup as a community leader, partner and strategic resource for the Western United States.
We are committed to reaching the lost, the last and the least. We will not only be a diverse community, we will be a global community. As such, our graduates will be impacting the world around them while they are in school and when they graduate.
We are becoming a leader in integrated learning. Our core programs are delivered in a relationally connected environment and we offer a complete array of online, intensive, degree completion and on location educational experiences. Our integrated learning models, coupled with our internship practicum, mean that WJU graduates are ready to make a difference in the world for the cause of Christ during school and upon graduation. WJU graduates exemplify servant leadership in church and society through the integration of faith, learning and critical thought. An investment in a WJU education pays immediate and lifelong benefits for students personally and for our world at large.
For the first time ever in the history of our university, we have completed a $1 million annual campaign for student scholarships. We have more donors now than ever in our 75-year history. Tese ongoing relationships coupled with our commitment to keep tuition affordable will help us keep doors open to students who may not have the opportunity without the much-needed assistance your gifts provide. In the past you may remember our innovative decision to lower tuition and later freeze it. It is my sincere hope that WJU will be well-positioned and financially independent to address the increasing need for scholarships as the potential for private universities receiving financial aid could begin to decrease over the coming years.
In short, William Jessup University is becoming the Northern California based Christ-centered university, in partnership with the Church, distinctively known for:
Christ-centered relational and transformative education. Affordable excellence. Church and business partnerships. Equipping transformational leaders.
Regional and global impact in the seven channels of cultural influence ( family, church, business, education, health, government, arts/media/entertainment).
Students who are thriving spiritually, receiving a quality liberal arts education and are becoming exceptionally employable.
An entrepreneurial spirit where our students are becoming leaders and funders of Great Commission and global-impact initiatives.
William Jessup University is living out the calling that God has placed before us. Te future burns bright and we truly are Transforming Tomorrow, Today!
