No.1 Our Founder


William ‘Brother Bill’ Jessup believed that the best way to reach the world for Christ was to start a Christian College. He had three elements upon which the school was founded. First, he wanted the college to be Christ-centered, deriving character and energy from the Holy Spirit. Second, that the authority of scripture would serve as our guide and third, that we would have a passion for the lost and to see the world transformed for Christ.


No.2 Relocation Opportunities


Almost as far back as the creation of SJBC, one can find evidence of the need to grow and expand to new facilities. Tis sketch for the 1942 SJBC yearbook is a clear indicator of the need even back then.


No.4 Off-Campus Food Runs


Nothing says college like studying late, odd sleep schedules and the inevitable midnight food run off-campus. Here are some favorites from our SJBC/ SJCC students:


Togo’s – In 1967, the very first Togo’s was established in San Jose not far from SJBC. Te original store was so small that only four patrons could enter at a time to order the famous sandwiches “to go.”


Lou’s Donuts – Te original location was at 16th and Santa Clara streets but later moved to Delmas Avenue. Original owner Lou Ades sold his business to Charles Chavira, who was greatly admired by all those who sought after his famous chocolate and plain glazed risen donuts. Lou’s Donuts won community and national recognition.


Iguana’s – Where you could get a burrito as big as your head!


7-Eleven – For every fast-food snack imaginable (yes, even a Hot Pocket!) Maybe it wasn’t the most nutritionally sound, but it kept a lot of students fed between meals.

Whether it be a 1940s bulletin for “A College On Wheels!” or growing and expanding evening, weekend and online courses for students, we have always been about flexible models of ministry and education to fit student needs.
