BMC Club Guidelines: Equipment £Free

Setting up and managing a climbing or walking club can throw up many questions. Our guidelines for BMC clubs will help answer some of them. This free pdf covers all the basics for anyone looking after pooled equipment and has a sample inspection record sheet. www.thebmc.co.uk/ bmc-club-guidelines

CLUB GEAR examples might include:

• Damaged rope with the core visible • Sticky karabiner gates and jammed camming devices

• Partially unassembled harnesses • Bent and broken wires on nuts • Cracked helmet shell

When lending kit out to novices, remember that you must check any kit for them as they are unlikely to know what to look out for themselves.

Store carefully

Gear will wear out with use, which is to be expected. Putting gear away wet or dirty is almost a guarantee that it won’t work

correctly next time it is used, and this may shorten its lifespan through increased wear or corrosion. So, before putting any gear away, give it a good clean and rinse off, followed by natural drying. Make sure you maintain and store any gear responsibly to get the best out of it. Spilt chemicals can leave residues which destroy ropes and other textile products. Garages and car boots are danger areas, so give your kit some extra protection by transporting it in tackle bags. And, fi nally, if you don’t have a dedicated kit store, blue expedition barrels are a good option for storage of club kit.
