Is there anything better than sport climbing in the sun? Maybe, but it hasn’t been discovered yet. Our top sport climber Steve McClure reveals his top five hot-rock holidays.

Portland, UK Some would argue Portland is world class. With a huge range of climbing to suit all levels, it’s well bolted with a friendly atmosphere and seaside feel. But, most importantly, it's always sunny on Portland (apparently).

Kalymnos, Greece The ultimate sport-holiday destination? Unfortunately, the rest of the world also thinks so too. Yet, plan carefully and you could have the place pretty quiet: avoid school holidays, and aim for just after Easter or October. Your reward: a mind- blowing selection of excellent routes, cheap accommodation, excellent food, short walks and friendly locals.

Ardeche, France This half-forgotten area in the South of France will relax you with all things French. Ancient chateaus, lavender fields, bakeries and a winding river make this ideal spot for long summer days. Multi-facing crags are your friends in summer, and it’s also perfect in early autumn or late spring. One of the best family destinations?

Costa Blanca, Spain One of the first Spanish areas to be discovered by us Brits. Probably the best winter climate for climbing in the whole of Spain. Features every style, from huge overhangs to gentle walls, with cheap accommodation in Benidorm (if you can handle it) or gîtes out in the beautiful countryside.

Red River, USA If you’ve become really strong indoors, how about a trip across the pond? Perfect for making the transition from indoors to out, Red River is the classic steep venue with good holds. Featuring well-equipped lines and easy-to-read routes in a beautiful setting – plus cake shops and pizzerias – it’s probably the best sport climbing in the USA.

Steve McClure is one of the best rock climbers in the world, having climbed the hardest sport route in the UK at 9a+. He’s a member of the new BMC Ambassador Team. www.steve-mcclure.com
