www.twitter.com/Team_BMC The BMC hits 70 2014:

70 years ago, Geoffrey Winthrop Young – a leading rock climber, mountaineer and president of the Alpine Club – had a vision: a new body to represent all climbers.

a big year for big anniversaries

It’s not just the BMC that’s celebrating a major anniversary this year. Here are some other impressive milestones that we know of. It's a fantastic 40 for Cotswold Outdoor, and the big fi ve-0 for Mountain Training, Bowles Rocks Trust, and the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation. The fi rst route on Gogarth was also established 50 years ago. It’s been 60 years since the great K2 was climbed and the Peak-based Mynydd Climbing Club was set up. Celebrating at 80 we have Chris Bonington and the K Fellfarers outdoors club (the club is planning an exciting 80 islands challenge). Finally, it’s the centenary of the iconic fi rst ascent of Central Buttress, Scafell.

ORESEEING THAT ONCE WORLD WAR II was over, the pre-war boom of enthusiasm for the hills would be resumed by a new generation, Winthrop Young was campaigning to set up a British Mountaineering Council.

Since its formation in 1944, the BMC has developed into a body which now represents over 76,000 members and 270 affi liated clubs. One which is now uniquely placed in being both a representative body for sport and an outdoor environmental campaigning organisation. Winthrop Young probably wouldn’t recognise modern climbing – redpointing, competitions, deep-water soloing, bolts. But one thing

has remained unchanged since his day: countless passionate volunteers and staff have ensured that the spirit of British climbing, walking and mountaineering remains just as adventurous and independent as it was in 1944. We’re marking our anniversary with a series of outdoor festivals including the Portland Festival and AGM weekend (page 64), the Bristol Climbing Festival and a Stanage Festival.

T N We may be 70 but the BMC is keeping itself young by

listening to the under 25s. Over 2,000 young people completed our recent survey and gave very positive

feedback on what the BMC is doing as well as giving us some new ideas for the future. After all, it is the younger generation that will be guiding the BMC over its next 70 years.
