ACCESS BRIEFING

“It’s easy to fi nd out if a crag is restricted: check our Regional Access Database online (www.thebmc.co.uk/rad) or download our RAD app from Google Play, now available for iPhone as well as Android phones.”

Rob Dyer, BMC Access & Conservation Offi cer LANCASHIRE: Wilton 3

Bolton Gun Club recently applied for planning permission to install a classroom in the quarry. The original location was close to the bottom of the Orange Wall area, creating a potentially dangerous landing for climbers. Following discussion, the plan is now to install two smaller shipping containers further from the crag. This means no impact to climbers and the Gun Club can still develop the site as they need.

SOMERSET: Cheddar Gorge

The 2014 access calendar is available to download from www.thebmc.co.uk/cheddar. Please stick to the agreed access dates and make sure you have proof of £10 million third-party liability insurance (standard with BMC membership) when climbing in the gorge. This is crucial to maintain future access.

MID WALES: Elan Valley

There are several minor crags with climbing in this Mid-Wales valley, but land owners have recently indicated they will not allow climbing without a licence system, despite the land appearing to be on open access land. The BMC is investigating.

NORTH WALES: Black Ladders, Carneddau

Continuing parking problems on the approach track are creating confl ict with local residents and farmers. Please ensure that parked vehicles do not block the tracks, which are used by large tractors and agricultural vehicles. The BMC is attempting to negotiate a solution.

For more competitions see www.thebmc.co.uk/competitions NORTH WALES: Creigiau Heulog, Great Orme

These newly redeveloped minor crags on the west shore of the Great Orme are vitally important refuges for some of the rarest plants in North Wales. They lie within an SSSI and a European Special Area of Conservation. BMC, National Resource Wales and Conwy Council have agreed that climbing should not continue here.

NORTH WALES: Llanddulas Caves

Residents of nearby houses have recently complained about climbers’ cars blocking access and creating an obstruction on Ffordd Newydd/New Road. Please park sensibly and consider using the nearby car park near Beach Road.

PEMBROKESHIRE: Range West

The MOD recently indicated it would restrict total recreational visitors to a maximum of 30 per day (climbers, fi shermen and surfers). They’ve now agreed that if there’s demand for 30 climbers to access the Range on any given day they will try to accommodate. The briefi ng dates for 2014 are: 18 April (Good Friday), 24 May and 26 July.
