combination of appealing photo-realism with a minimalist composition and aesthetic. When offered in Martel Maides Auctions sale in September 2013, estimated at a modest £200-£300, several enthusiastic bidders contested the painting to a hammer price of £2,800, far outstripping some of the prices achieved by recognised 19th century artists in the same sale.

Raphaelites, Newlyn School and Scottish Colourists. Good examples of work from these important movements can still be bought for realistic sums, such as the £13,000 paid for ‘The Tulip Tree’ by the Newlyn School artist Frank Bramley at Martel Maides Auctions sale of the contents of ‘Priors’ Jersey in May 2012. global headlines.

This shift has been due to a number of factors, chiefly fashion led due to changes in interior design and a desire to move away from what is seen as the previous generation’s aesthetic. The oil painting by the contemporary artist Stuart Brown illustrates this point, a striking work depicting tomatoes piled in a galvanised pan, dramatically lit against a stark, monochromatic backdrop. The artist has little track record at auction but his work has obvious technical and visual merit, and displays a winning

The flip side to this is that many 18th and 19th century works are hugely underappreciated and hence extremely accessible. Good 18th century watercolours are available at auction from £100 and 19th century oils by established names such as John Frederick Herring, Benjamin Williams Leader and the Norwich School artist John Berney Crome are cheaper now in real terms than they have been for over thirty years. A fine example of each artist’s work can be bought for well under £5,000 at auction, such as the fine oil of Telegraph House, Nelson’s Column and Yarmouth Beach, Norfolk by John Berney Crome, which sold for £2,600 at Martel Maides Auctions in June 2013.
