There’s also evidence that car‑dependent
neighbourhoods outside bigger towns are much less trusting of other people than people who live in walkable neighbourhoods where housing is mixed with shops, services and places to work. Planning affects all of us, every day.
One of my priorities as Planning Minister was to
improve the foundations of the planning system. I wanted to improve access to our services, to reduce the time and cost of getting decisions made and I wanted to bring in a radically improved planning appeals system. And, nearly three years since I came into the post, I think we’ve made some real progress.
Planning applications are cheaper, the department’s performance is faster and access to our service is easier and more transparent.
For example, the Department of the Environment has recently formalised the pre- application process so potential applicants now
know if their plans are on track before they submit them. Further down the line, outline applications, which give permission in principle to development, will soon cost just a quarter of the price of a full application so people don’t waste time submitting an application only to see it fall at an avoidable hurdle.
