Looking after

children? It’s not as easy as ABC!

????

Introduction: Unless you are involved in child care, it is unlikely that you will fully realise or appreciate the amount of hard work, organisation and planning that is involved in looking after a large group of children.

By JANE MOY, Centre Point Trust

Boasting two nurseries and a play care centre, Centre Point Trust cares for almost 500 of the Island’s children, making us one of the largest child care providers in Jersey.

The Play Care Centre at La Pouquelaye is registered to cater for a maximum of 170 children at any time; and it is the dedication, enthusiasm and unquestionable commitment of the staff which ensures that each and every child who attends Centre Point goes home with a smile on their face.

We pride ourselves in being able to offer disadvantaged children the opportunity to experience things that other children take for granted. Simple things such as riding a bike, kayaking, camping or

having a surfing lesson – simple things, but things that can greatly benefit a child’s confidence and self-esteem.

The Play Care Centre is split into three units:

Wrap Around Care Managed by Nancy

McClintock, this self-contained unit caters for children aged 3 to 5 years who attend school nursery or reception classes. It features an amazing external play area which has recently undergone a major refurbishment courtesy of State Street and the Lloyds TSB Foundation.

Years 1 & 2

This unit is managed by Zelia de Abreu and her team. Apart from an imaginary room and a construction and games room, there is also a dedicated craft room where the children can create their own works of art. In the words of Jasmine (age 10) it is a place “where we can do lots of creative stuff

20/20 Society Page 47 and let our imaginations flow”.

Years 3,4,5,6+ This is the largest of our three units and is managed by Graeme Fitchett, who is also the Deputy Play Care Manager for the site. Thanks to the support and generosity of the Association of Jersey Charities, the external play area for this unit will also be undergoing a major refurbishment shortly. The plans include a dedicated football pitch and a mini “Millenium Park” – both of which were chosen by the children in the unit.
