GRAFTED TOMATOES AND VEGETABLES

Why pay more for a grafted vegetable plant? What makes them worth the extra price? These were questions we asked when grafted vegetables fi rst started appearing on the American market. We admit we were doubt-

ers – until we grew them ourselves and saw the proof. Like superheroes, the grafted vegetables were stronger, produced fruit faster, and because they were able to fend off diseases, the harvests were bigger.

IMPROVING PLANTS THE NATURAL WAY

GRAFTED VEGETABLE VARIETIES

SWEET PEPPERS

Grafting joins the top of one plant – the scion – to the root system of a separate variety – the rootstock. As the tissues fuse, the vigor and disease resistance of the rootstock combines with the excep- tional fruit qualities of the original variety. The result is a ‘Super-Powered’ plant. Fol- lowing are a few of the advantages:

• HIGHER YIELDS • IMPROVED RESISTANCE TO PESTS,

• STRONGER GROWTH • LARGER FRUITS • A LONGER HARVEST SEASON

Boost tomato crops 10 to 20% with this bright red, thin plas- tic fi lm. Like a black mulch, it warms the soil, retains moisture, deters pests and controls weeds, but the red fi lm also refl ects far-red wave-lengths up into the plant, stimulating development. Results are earlier and increased yields. Studies also show sig- nifi cant increases in strawberry yields with the use of red mulch fi lm. Not recommended for use in warmer southern states.

Smart Pot Aeration Containers

fabric, Smart Pots have the rigidity to hold their shape, but unlike hard-sided pots, when roots reach the fuzzy walls they penetrate the fabric, causing the plant to develop masses of lateral roots. This unique ‘air-pruning’ capability results in a much larger, more fi - brous and healthier root ball. Other advantages are that roots stay cooler in hot weather, excess moisture evaporates easily and they can be reused many times. The two sizes offered are ideal for grow- ing tomatoes. The larger the pot, the bigger the plant will grow.

For gardeners who want containers that will grow the best possible plants. Made of a soft-sided, non-woven, lightweight black

53370–An easy way to get water and plant food to the roots, right where it’s needed. A convenient two-part de- sign allows it to be placed around mature plants, eliminating risk of plant injury. Slots in the base allow for a wire cage to be inserted. The red color warms the soil and refl ects red light up into the plant to stimulate plant growth. Helps retain soil moisture, reduces the need for weeding

and protects against cutworms. 1 set (3 craters) for $22.95; 2 or more sets for $19.95 per set
