Dear Gardening Friends, If there is one thing I know for sure about gardening, it’s that I will never know everything about gardening. I said this last year and I reaffi rm it again. Each year I have the pleasure of being asked to talk to gardening groups throughout Wisconsin on various topics. Quite often, I come away with new gardening ideas to try. This year it was straw-bale gardening. I tried it by lining bales along a chain-link fence around our dog run and came away with more produce than I would ever have believed. If you want to read more about my straw- bale gardening experience, you can fi nd an article I wrote on the topic in the ‘Gardener's Corner’ section of our website.

I also had fun with seed tapes. Customers have often asked for seed tapes in the past, but we were unable to fi nd a reliable source of high

quality tapes. Finally, the search is over. These tapes manufactured in England incorporate our own seed into the tapes, so we know the seed is top quality, high-germinating and true-to-name. The material they use for the tapes is organic and completely biodegradable. So if your radishes, beets and carrots only develop tops because you plant them too thick, seed tapes are the solution to your problem.

We went a little overboard with new products again this year, but we’ve come to fi nd our customers are an adventurous lot and like to try something new. With over 300 new products to choose from, there should be something interesting for everyone. Nature’s Source Plant Food is a product I found worked very well. We hope you will try it, too. Check out our special offer of a 50¢ sampler packet on our order form. You’ll also get a free sample packet of Nature’s Source Plant Food with every order of tomato plants we send out. As for tomato plants, our selection of grafted plants on page 9 is up to 26 varieties. I picked tomatoes off my still-healthy grafted plants up until October 17, the date of our fi rst hard freeze.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our gardening business. You are truly a valued member of our garden family.

Seed Tapes

EASY TO SOW – EASY TO GROW Take the guesswork out of planting.

• Saves time. • No wasted seed. • No need to worry about correct seed spacing, planting depth or thinning.

These are only a few reasons for using seed tapes. They have been popular with English gardeners for years, and after trialing them in our own gardens with al- most 100% germination and spectacular harvests, we’re confi dent you’ll love them, too! They’re especially great for vegetables we tend to plant too thickly such as carrots, lettuce, radishes and beets. For this year, we’re offering about 20 of our most popular varieties incorporated in seed tapes. Look for them high- lighted in blue below the price line of the variety description. The tapes are sent as three 5-foot sections and will plant a total of 15 feet of row. They can be cut to any length, so can be custom fi t for raised beds and containers as well as the garden. The tapes are completely biodegradable and organic, made with a special tissue paper that contains no adhesives or other artifi cial products. Once moist- ened, the paper starts to break down to optimize the natural germination process.

land is limited and crop rotation isn’t always possible. Grafting is a process where the vegetable variety desired (the scion) is attached to the root system of a separate plant (the rootstock) which has been selected for qualities such as vigor and disease resistance which the scion may be lacking. As the tissues fuse, the result is a plant with the best qualities of both the original variety and the rootstock.

On page 9 you will fi nd a selection of grafted tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. We urge you to check out the merits of grafted vegetables for yourself. We’re confi dent next year you will be back for more.
