CLEMATIS CULTURE: Superb for summer color, grow clematis for bright accents on a trellis or fence. For best success they require a rich, alkaline (sweet) soil and a site with good drainage. To maintain soil alkalinity mix a half-cup of agricultural lime into the soil each spring. Choose a location with sun at least half the day, and keep the roots cool with a thick mulch, or plant annuals or perennials in front to shade them. Clematis vines are fast growing, hardy, and increase in size and beauty every year. Plant several varieties to extend the blooming pe- riod. For proper pruning of clematis, see the information box below. Our clematis are shipped in 3½" to 4" pots except where noted.

PROPER PRUNING OF CLEMATIS

NOTE: THE CORRESPONDING GROUP NUMBER IS LOCATED AT END OF THE DESCRIPTION OF EACH VARIETY:

Group 1–These varieties fl ower in the spring on growth produced the previous season. They generally do not need to be pruned, but if some pruning is necessary, do so within one month after fl owering is fi nished.

Group 2–These cultivars bloom in early summer on previous year’s growth, followed by a rebloom in summer or fall on new growth. In late winter or early spring cut back stems to a strong pair of well- developed buds and fasten the stems onto their support

Group 3–These later fl owering varieties bloom on new growth dur- ing summer and fall. In late winter or early spring cut back to 12 to 18 inches from the ground.

Clematis & Lilac Starter 51138–Encourages growth and blooming. This soil conditioner helps make sweeter, richer, more al- kaline soil which clematis and lilacs prefer. Unless your soil is excessively acid, we recommend mixing about ¼ pound per plant in the soil when planting and each spring once established. (A) 1 Lb. $5.95; (B) 4 Lbs. $12.95
