NORTH AMERICA BRIEFING

Renovation of Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum

Forest City Ratner, the real estate company that developed Barclays Center, will also oversee a US$229m renovation of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island.

Nassau Events Center, an affi liate of Forest City Ratner, was selected by local Nassau County authorities for the contract. The deal will see Nassau Events Center renovate the 18,000-capacity arena and take a 34-year lease. The arena has been ‘home’ to the NHL’s New York Islanders since 1972.

New Roof for Arthur Ashe Stadium

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has hired Hunt Construction Group to build a retractable roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium; the centrepiece of the US Open. The building of the roof over the 22,500-seat arena is part of a complete transformation of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Designed by Rossetti, the original designer and

architect of the stadium,

the roof is expected to cost in excess of US$100m. It will be

constructed of fl exible, translucent PTFE fabric stretched over a steel frame, which will be supported by eight steel columns surrounding the venue. Construction is scheduled for completion in August 2017 and forms part of the fi rst phase of a much wider, US$550m transformation project.

Cowboys to Build New HQ and Indoor Training Facility

Frisco city council has approved National Football League (NFL) team, the Dallas Cowboys’ US$115m plan to build a new headquarters and indoor training facility. The practice facility will include a new indoor 12,000-seat stadium, which will be surrounded by a fi ve-acre offi ce complex and a 66-acre retail, hotel, and restaurant district.

The city of Frisco and Frisco Independent School District (ISD) will share the cost of the project, with funds

to be collected from existing tax bases. Under the agreement, Frisco ISD are contributing US$30m to the project, which will enable high-school football teams to play at the new stadium on Thursday and Friday nights. Offi cials have suggested that the new stadium will be completed in time for the start of the 2016 season.

Revamp of Wrigley Field

Chicago city council has approved a US$500m renovation of Wrigley Field, the historic home of the MLB’s Chicago Cubs. The revamp will include new corporate boxes, larger bullpens, a nearby hotel, and a 5,700sqft video screen in the left fi eld stands of the 99-year-old stadium.

Technological Developments & Naming Rights Deals

With venues and the fans that populate them becoming ever more ‘savvy’ when it comes to the latest technological developments, the sector has borne witness to an increasingly more sophisticated ‘fan experience era’. Look at any New Build or Renovation project and you will fi nd more focus being placed on providing patrons with the best possible fan experience than ever before. Big brands are also continuing to place high value on sports venues, with naming-rights deals across North America growing apace.

Louisiana Superdome re-Named Mercedes-Benz Superdome

National Football League (NFL) franchise, New Orleans Saints, and the State of Louisiana have reached an agreement with German luxury car manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz, for the naming rights to the side’s home stadium, the state-owned Louisiana Superdome.

The ten-year deal sees the 73,000-seat host venue for the 2013 Super Bowl renamed for the fi rst time to become the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, and while the fi nancial details have not yet been released, values between US$50m and US$60m have been reported.

World-Record Attempt: Largest HD Video Board

Texas Motor Speedway is going for the record of having the world’s largest HD video board with what has been nicknamed ‘Big Hoss TV’ by speedway offi cials. In a state that already boasts seven of the world’s 50 largest HD video boards, the Speedway will sprint into the No. 1 position for the largest HD video board in a sporting venue in the world.

The Panasonic video board display will be located in the centre of backstretch and feature a staggering 20,633.64sqft of HD display, with dimensions 218ft wide by 94.6ft tall. The entire structure will stand nearly 125ft above ground level and weigh more than 108 tons.

Cleveland Browns ‘Go Green’

NFL team, the Cleveland Browns, have begun a new partnership with Quasar Energy Group that is designed to divert stadium food waste away from landfi lls sites. Instead, excess waste at the team’s FirstEnergy Stadium will be converted into renewable energy. Quasar operates an anaerobic digester at Ohio State University, which produces biogas for energy and fuel use out of food leftovers.

The initiative is part of the public-private effort to better manage waste, with Browns’ offi cials expecting 35 tonnes of the stadium’s food waste to be diverted away from landfi ll sites as a result.
