in the U2 360 World Tour, infused practical solutions to the complex undertaking.

Together the team looked for opportunities to evolve the current practice of retractable roof designs to create a better and more dramatic roof. 360’s Bill Johnson drew initial inspiration for the roof from the team logo featuring infl ight motion of a Falcon wing. The dynamics and execution for the paradigm changing roof concepts further evolved with infl uence from the classic Greek Pantheon. The team’s vision from these workshops is largely what is being designed today.

The unique retractable roof moves eight lightweight cantilevered panels, clad in ETFE fabric, to create an oval opening above the playing fi eld. The roof movement is linear and uses standard retractable roof equipment, although at fi rst glance it gives the appearance of a rotating movement. The lightweight roof panels move approximately 200 lineal feet as opposed to the more typical retractable roofs in the US that move two heavy panels much farther distances. The retractable roof movements are integrated into the roof truss design which is then integrated with the design of the circular ring scoreboard halo, thus creating a more holistic approach. This integration of the architecture with structure makes for a more compelling and cost effective design.

“Steel tonnage has direct impacts on constructability and budget. We worked to integrate the roof track components into the roof trusses as a harmonic system thereby reducing the tonnage,” says Hatfi eld.

Features

Amenities of the New Stadium Project focus on improving the game-day experience. This includes the fans, media, team and support crews.

As attendance at sporting events is being challenged by the improved in- home experience, elements of the new stadium are being planned to bring fans back to the live event. Features like the 360 degree scoreboard halo integrated into the roof structure that does not impede sightlines and allows for more creative content, and dedicated fan lounges for monitoring Fantasy Football and other Red Zone games in progress, were critical to reach today’s sophisticated fans. Advanced connectivity and technology are being planned to form a smart stadium IT backbone that will provide better service and bandwidth to personal mobile devices used by fans and stadium operations staff.

A wider array of seating options at various price points is being developed throughout the stadium for varying degrees of service, vantage points and offered amenities, from premium seating products across to general seating areas for the fans in the far corners of the venue. Adaptable spaces are being designed for fl exibility to expand and reduce capacity, layout and function.

Outside the stadium a refi ned masterplan establishes an interactive plaza extending the spirit of Centennial Park as a year- round gathering space as well as being active on game and event days.

Design efforts are still in the early schematic stages and the site south of the existing Georgia Dome has only recently been secured. Spaces will further be refi ned in the coming months. Atlanta’s goal is for completion in March 2017 of this iconic statement that set out to challenge everything. 
