Jim Caine, Manager at Firland Management in Michigan, USA, believes that successful facility management is about maintaining high quality ice and optimum equipment function as well as minimising the costs and environmental impact of rink operations. With leaks being one of the main problems in every rink, it was critical for Firland Management to fi nd a solution that was simple, affordable, and easy to use.
As a proof of concept, and with the Shaler team onsite, the ice was removed at Firland’s Flint, Michigan rink for its annual summer shut- down. This was to ensure that Firland Management would be able to witness the actual effect of Rink Seal Pro on their system. Within hours of installation, they were able to see the product sealing their refrigeration system leaks.
To date, the rink has been up and running for well over a year since installing Rink Seal Pro, and there has been no sign of further leakage.
“In the past, the only option was to buy barrels and barrels of ethylene gylcol to keep the system working,” Caine says, explaining how he used to handle refrigeration leaks. “That cost adds up really fast and the cleanup is a mess.
We could easily see an increase in operation costs just to run the chillers by an additional $500 to $1,000 per month. Plus, often the leaks are so small, that we not only can’t see them, but we still need to keep adding glycol.
