develop an LED lighting solution for Wells Fargo Arena.”

SHOWCASE lighting

The new LED-based system uses a fraction of the energy of the previous lights. In fact, the new high-effi ciency lights have cut energy consumption by 75 percent – reducing usage from 109 kW at full capacity to just 28 kW – while increasing light levels inside the arena by 25 percent. Wells Fargo Arena now exceeds the broadcast lighting requirements for the NCAA when it comes to choosing sites for its postseason events.

Over the next 10 years, Arizona State estimates it will save approximately $357,000 in energy conservation and reduced maintenance costs.

Notre Dame is no stranger to the pioneering spirit of Musco. Over the past 30 years, Musco’s projects on campus have included the 1982 debut of its Mobile Lighting System at the ABC telecast of the Notre Dame vs. Michigan football game, lighting for the Hesburgh Library World of Life mural, and the Stinson Rugby Stadium, among many others. With Purcell Pavilion – home to the Notre Dame basketball teams – the time was right for Musco’s state-of-the- art LED-based lights.

The project involved the installation of 11,552 LEDs to achieve the optimal lighting for the arena, as well as the most energy effi cient solution. Since the completion of the project, the arena’s energy consumption has been reduced by 73 percent, while increasing light levels 48 percent – which now exceeds NCAA broadcast requirements for its national championships. With the long life of LEDs, lighting maintenance at Purcell Pavilion has been virtually eliminated. The new lights will save approximately 469,000 kW annually – falling from 124 kW to 33 kW at maximum usage – and will eliminate the output of approximately 300 metric tons of CO2 each year, supporting the university’s ongoing Energy Conservation Measures programme.

which includes dimming for non- spectator activities. “The new system provides very consistent light levels across the arena and excellent colour rendition,” says Tom Blicher, General Manager of the Joyce Center. “The basketball coaches are thrilled with the new lighting.”
