sound SYSTEMS
Just four of these separate full-range vertical array/subwoofer
‘stacks’ placed at each corner of the fi eld shake the building.
Each speaker stack had to be easily movable by one person, fast to set up, yet deliver high output and be capable of projecting its sound long distances.
Each speaker stack had to be self- contained including its own mobile cart, power amplifi ers, processing, and all AC and signal cabling. The full- range system and subwoofer had to be permanently attached to each other.
The amplifi ers had to deliver suffi cient power to ensure 3 dB of headroom and each stack had to operate from a standard 20 A 120 V ac circuit. Each stack had to include a 15.15m (50ft) ac mains cable.
To add to the complexity, the rig could be no more than 1.8m (6ft) tall, so that it could easily be moved through the stadium’s tunnels onto the fi eld, or into storage to ensure that sightlines weren’t interrupted.
The speakers had to be ‘industrial grade’ with durable enclosures and metal grilles that could withstand impact without damage. The speakers had to be black and no manufacturer’s logo could be visible.
The challenges were acoustical, electrical and mechanical – and would require some customisation work to give the facility the fl exibility and performance it was looking for.
One Systems – On Point Audio solution
The components selected to create the specifi ed system include 4 x One Systems 312CIMs, 4 x On Point Audio OPA-218-Subs and 4 x Powersoft K3 DSP amplifi ers. One channel of the Powersoft K3 DSP amplifi ers drives each speaker and subwoofer. The Italian- made K3’s built-in DSP provides full processing capability to optimise each speaker’s performance. Its 2,600 watts per channel output is well matched to the requirements of the speakers.
The One Systems 312CIM is a vertical array speaker featuring three 12-inch woofers with large-format voice coils and a coaxially mounted large-format compression driver. The system features 1,200 watts continuous power handling and delivers a 60-degree conical coverage. Thanks to its
vertical array confi guration and driver placement, the 312CIM delivers its rated 60-degree coverage down to 400 Hz, thereby improving its vocal intelligibility. The 312CIM is equipped with 19 x M10 insert points that enable it to be suspended vertically or horizontally. Thanks to its powerful transducers, the system is capable of high output and long throw with wide, smooth response.
The On Point Audio OPA-218-Sub utilises two powerful 18-inch woofers with 4-inch voice coils housed in a Vented Slot enclosure with 1,600 watts continuous, 6,400 watts peak power handling. The OPA-218-Sub’s unique design features the woofers mounted on angled baffl es with a large tuned chamber and long vented slot that delivers usable response down to 25 Hz and projects low frequencies with power and authority.
The OPA-218-Sub enclosures are short and slim, but very deep. The enclosure’s geometry and solid 13-ply marine birch plywood construction gave Tech Electronics a perfect base for permanently attaching a 312CIM on top of each subwoofer. Tech Electronics’
