hitches and container brackets are all included. The Atlas website has an in- struction sheet for installing these parts. The ramps have three pins which are inserted into corresponding holes in each end of the car. The trailer hitches also have pins which are in- serted into holes in the deck. I did open the ramp holes up a tad with a sharp hobby knife so that the ramps slid into the holes easily. A little bit of cyano- acrylate holds the ramps and trailer hitches snugly. Keep in mind that once these parts are installed, the cars will no longer fit into the nests in their box- es. I trimmed the nests so that the cars will fit into their boxes.
The cars are decorated beautifully. The decks of the flat cars are painted off white which is correct. This is some- thing that hasn’t been done in the past. The wheel guards are painted black also, which adds a nice bit of contrast to the deck. The top ramp surface is even painted off white as well. One thing that I am really looking forward to is weathering my flat car decks. These cars weather horribly. Every- body has their own preferences when it comes to weathering. The car certainly looks great as is. The lettering is crisp and clean as one would expect from At- las. One small problem I did have with my models was that the yellow paint on the Trailer Train car did chip off of the wire grab rails in a few places. I touched that up easily enough though. The car is correctly weighted and
tracks beautifully. The cars will run on 13″ radius curves but on my test track they did run on tighter curves. They looked strange doing so, but it is possible. The trucks are equipped with great looking metal wheelsets which is one of the reasons the cars track so well. The Atlas AccuMate couplers are body mounted which is a huge bonus. That is also another reason the car tracks so well.
The fine details are what really makes this car so spectacular. Wire grab irons, coupler cut levers, ratchet- style handbrake and all associated brake rigging are all present. The long rod between the handbrake and the brake cylinder is painted yellow which had to be a difficult task. Underneath the car, the airbrake system compo- nents are separate parts while the air lines and linkages are part of the cast metal body. Whether this car is run- ning empty or with trailers on the deck, the car is absolutely stunning looking. Atlas has really done their home- work with this car. The details, decora- tion and performance of this car really place it at the front of the pack. With all of this you would assume that the price of this car is astronomical. The retail price of the decorated cars is $24.95 and the undecorated cars is $19.95. Anybody modeling the TOFC operations on their favorite road will definitely need several of these cars.
