www.broadway-limited.com. In 1939 EMD introduced the NW2 locomotive. Most railroads were in the process of at least looking into replac- ing their steam fleet with diesel power around this time. The NW2 embodied what the “modern” diesel switcher should be. The 12-cylinder EMD 567 prime mover could produce 1,000 horsepower which was adequate for this type of service and the design of the locomotive made it ideal for switch- ing operations. The cab offered excel- lent visibility for the engineer and the short wheelbase made the locomotive very agile. The step design at each end of the locomotive was ideal for crew members riding or boarding the loco- motive while in motion. Railroads across the country recognized all these advancements and EMD sold 1,145 NW2’s between 1939 and 1949. The design of the switcher has re-
