the model is beautiful. Broadway Lim- ited has built its reputation on their sound and performance and this NW2 does not disappoint. I placed my model on one of my HO scale dioramas and fired up the NCE DCC system. I was quickly able to program the locomotive for its cab number and get it running. Switchers operated mostly at slow speeds while drilling cars in the yard. This model has excellent low speed operation. It started creeping along at .9 s.m.p.h. I wasn’t sure it was even moving at first. Overall the model op- erates


smoothly through its entire


speed range and at 8.6 ounces and is able to pull well. It handled 20 cars on level track without any trouble. I could have probably pulled more if


I had


more track. The model does all of its pulling without the use of traction tires, too. Broadway Limited advertises that the locomotive will operate on a mini- mum radius of 18″. I found that to be accurate although my model did oper- ate on tighter radius track. My test track has rail joint bars prototypically spaced with the ends of each section of rail bent downward slightly. The joint bars are staggered prototypically as well. I thought this engine might have trouble staying on the rail because of this, but it handled the undulation of the track very well. The amount of flex- ibility and motion in the trucks made


the little critter hug the rail. The model sounds as good as it looks and runs. When I fired up the NW2, I immediately heard that typical EMD 567 idle. The engine makes all kinds of noises which are prototypically correct. I really liked the way the bell starts out with a rather uneven “ding” until it evens out and then rings steadily. The horn has that typical single chime “blat” with a little echo at the end. When throttled up, the prime mover speeds up accordingly. One thing I did notice is that it sounds as though the recording of the idle sound is sped up rather than using recordings of the transition between throttle steps. The effect of the prime mover throttling up and down is still very good and when you are in notch 8 this little doggy is screaming. It is a joy to listen to. All the sounds, and there are many


of them, feature controllable volume through individual CV’s. There are so many sounds the operator can activate that I can’t even begin to list them all here.


A comprehensive instruction


manual is included with the model, and it would be wise to take a look through it in order to see what this model is capable of doing. The switcher is one of those locomo- tives that can find a home on virtually any layout. They have been used for everything from passenger service to heavy coal drags. Installing sound in a switcher is a tough task and anybody that has tried will agree with me. Pick- ing up a sound equipped locomotive such as this and putting it right into service on one’s layout is huge for us modelers. I would be more than happy seeing several of these guys working away in a large yard somewhere. The
