variety of advertising it used. The first chapter covers the railroad’s early years. At the end of the Civil War the Pennsylvania Railroad had emerged as one of the nation’s premiere railroads and the book’s reproductions of its broadsides, some of them quite colorful and containing detailed illustrations, present an image of a company able to provide service not only in Pennsylva- nia, but beyond to New York, Balti- more, Washington, D.C. and points in the mid-west. It is the second chapter, covering the 1880’s, that contains what are among the fanciest works pro- duced. Adorned with detailed artwork of scenic locations,

ships, animals, Dynamic Suds, Rolling Billboards

trains and passenger car interiors, and employing a variety of type faces, these timetables and brochures are fascinat- ing to look at. Following the artwork as it progresses through the years offers a view of how railroad service developed. By the opening of the twentieth centu- ry, the locomotives pictured were grow- ing larger and the rail cars heavier. Service was also changing, with some trains being marketed to the new and growing middle class, while others were aimed at those with a more sub- stantial income or the businessman. Not all railroad advertisements were for specific trains or service. In the 1920 and 30’s, the PRR advertised for companies to locate along its rail lines. It also ran ads extolling it employees and showing how the railroad helped make the everyday life Americans had come to expect possible. The chronological presentation shows not only how the railroad evolved, but also the changing tastes of the nation and how that was reflected in the advertising art that was used.
