www.tangentscalemodels.com. Tangent Scale Models offers ready- to-run models of the 52′-6″ all-steel, 70- ton gondola designed by the Bethlehem Steel Company of Johnstown, Pennsyl- vania. Bethlehem Steel designed the gondola to carry steel products such as I-beams, bars, rods and plate steel, manufactured products such as auto frames, scrap metal and bulk materials not requiring protection from the weather. The owning railroads were generally located in steel producing re- gions of the eastern United States. In July, 1937 Bethlehem Steel com- pleted the first 1,200 of these gondolas for the Baltimore & Ohio which as- signed them class O-59. Additional or- ders of the cars were built for five rail-
roads with the last order completed in 1957. Most of these gondolas were re- tired from revenue service by the mid- 1980’s while many served additional years in various maintenance-of-way functions. The Bethlehem-design featured riv- eted construction with fishbelly sides, 13 external pressed-steel side posts of equal length, AB brake set and corru- gated drop-ends with Wine drop-end locks.
The gondola dimensions were: inside length 52′-6″; inside width 9′-6″; inside height 3′-6″ and a rated capacity of 155,700 lbs. and 1,746 cubic feet. Numerous variations in details of the 37 lots manufactured over 20 years included underframe,
floor, drop-end
style, power handbrake, brake steps and trucks. The B&O gondolas had Duryea Cushion Underframes to act as long-travel shock absorbers to protect the car structure and load from dam- age during switching and train move- ment. Duryea Cushion underframes required deeper end sills on cars than conventional underframes required. Also the 10½″ deep center sill of Duryea Cushion Underframes extend-
