Harriman vs. Hill: Wall Street’s Great Railroad War, by Larry Haeg, tells the story of how James J. Hill, head of the Great Northern, and Edward Harriman, head of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific, and their wealthy partners bat- tled for control of the Northern Pacific.
