VOLUME 6 –


Non-B&O Bethlehem gondolas had conventional underframes. Unique to the B&O cars were slack adjusters and Tatum brake steps. Some cars had wood floors while others had steel plate floors. The drop-ends had either Dreadnaught, improved-Dreadnaught or straight corrugations. The power hand brake was side-mounted on the corner post of the B end. The Ajax pow- er handbrake was the most common but some lots had Universal, Klasing or Equipco style.


There were three types of tie-downs: some cars had 16 hinged u-shaped rods riveted in pairs to each interior side; some had Wine lading band anchors welded on the top of the side top chords and WM and Wabash cars had angles riveted to the top chords. The trucks were 70-ton AAR with spring planks or ASF A-3 Ride Control or Barber Stabi- lized S-2A or National C-1.


In later years some gondolas were modified for specific uses. Racks were installed for holding automobile frames and skids and covers for carry- ing steel coils. Interior partitions were installed to hold containers for l.c.l. bulk.

1957, Bethlehem Steel and two other builders manufactured a total of 9,471 of these gondolas: B&O (4,000), Cen- tral Railroad of Pennsylvania (1,000), Lehigh Valley (1,450), Reading (2,001), Wabash (100) and Western Maryland (920). In the early 1960’s B&O trans- ferred at least 1,000 of its Bethlehem- design gondolas to the Chesapeake & Ohio and they were rebuilt. The follow- ing numbers of gondolas remained in service in January, 1964, based on the Official Railway Equipment Register: B&O (1,402), CRP (128), Lehigh Valley (1,428), Reading (1,408), Wabash (334) and Western Maryland (919).
