beginnings in leftfield house (featuring the likes of Lee Jones and Motorcitysoul) through to a more bass-heavy menu in recent years, from Joy Orbison, George FitzGerald, Dusky, Midland and Scuba. To mark its 50th single, the vastly reliable Deetron presents a stunner, a one-sided vinyl release that’s put together like a Savile Row suit. No waste or wanking on here, just solid house music delivered in just over five minutes.

7.5 Green Velvet

Bigger Than Prince Circus Recordings

9.0

On his game, there’s no-one better than Green Velvet. And fortunately, he’s always on his game. Like here on Yousef’s Circus Recordings, for example. Devised when the pair were together touring in Indonesia, ‘Bigger Than Prince’ is delicious, Velvet’s, well, velvet vocal draped like a vintage mink over dirty - very dirty - synths. It’s subtle and masterful, simple but wildly effective. Hot Since 82 turns the track into a predictable Hot Creations clone, but the Martinez Brothers plough in some genuine funk. The original, however, just won’t quit.

Callisto

Need Ur Love Apollonia 9.0

For the second half of the ‘90s, Chicago’s Guidance Records could do no wrong, with its releases from the likes of Glenn Underground and Boo Williams still stone-cold classics. Sadly, Boston producer Callisto, aka Dana Kelley, one of the label’s most reliably soulful exponents, died in January this year. To show their thanks and appreciation, Frenchman Dan Ghenacia and his Apollonia crew have repressed his deep house standard ‘Need Ur Love’, a thing of singular beauty. Thanks for the music, Mr Kelley.

064 djmag.com Chris Turner

FlyLOVE Rebirth 8.0

Hailing from Oakland, California, Chris Turner is right at home on Shield’s Northern Italian outpost, Rebirth. When he’s not touring with people like Bilal, Gwen Stefani or Chris Brown, he’s indulging a love of very real house music, this being the first track to drop from his debut set ‘LOVElife Is A Challenge’. It’s weighed heavy with jazz, but as in Herbie Hancock, not the insipid ghastliness that passes for jazz in most house music. Detroit boy Andrés works additional wonders.

Cyril Hahn

Perfect Form PMR

8.0

Swiss-Canadian Cyril Hahn’s mixes of tracks like Destiny’s Child’s ‘Say My Name’ and Beyonce’s sis Solange have earned him Soundcloud plays into the several millions. Here for PMR, home to Julio Bashmore and Jessie Ware, he proffers ‘Perfect Form’, featuring Portland R&B outfit Shy Girls. If there’s a sound of ‘now’ in house music, this is it - a bouncing beat, stabbing synths, pads and a yearningly soulful vocal. The stars have certainly aligned here. Almost more enticing, though, is the understated b-side ‘Raw Cut’.

Deetron

Count On Me Aus Music 8.0

Will Saul’s Aus Music imprint has steadily morphed from its

Paraguayans LPZ have fans in Maya Jane Coles and Dan Avery in this acid bombshell, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to deduce why. ‘Think For Yourself’ is all tough 303 before closing up the filters and bringing in some blissful pads. The Posthuman mix steps up the vintage percussion some, while Council Fonk slams garage drums together with an aggressively reverbed soundscape. ‘Without You’, meanwhile, is another solid tool with which to dismantle a dancefloor. Use wisely.

Powel

Cloud City EP Fina Records

7.0

Powel joins the emerging roster at Leeds-based house imprint Fina - which now includes the likes of Move D, Morning Factory and Simon Baker - with a rather blissful four-tracker. ‘Cloud City’ is all-enveloping, boasting some of the warmest chords this side of the Adriatic Coast. ‘Falling In A Black’ is all pads and metronomic percussion, while ‘I’m Talking Quietly’ and ‘Getting Out’ embrace 110 bpm space disco, with soul- melting strings adorning the former.

Selvy

Keep It Comin’ EP Your Mama’s Friend 7.0

We’re big fans of Marcin Czubala’s Your Mama’s Friend imprint on the house page, and pleasingly, this is among the only tracks released this month of a ‘vintage’ nature that doesn’t use the Korg M1 ‘Robin S’ bass organ preset. For the record, it is now banned in this parish. Luckily, electric pianos are fine, so this solid, modern garage floor-filler from Selvy gets a thorough seal of approval. Just as gorgeous is ‘The Journey’ in the flip, with its towering pianos.

Adam Shelton feat. Francesca Lombardo

Mr Justin Case EP One Records 7.5

Rather cheekily dubbed an EP (it’s two tracks, and one’s a remix!), Shelton and the beguiling Francesca Lombardo nonetheless show some delightfully moody chops here.

DJ W!ld

Feel Me EP 2020 Vision 7.0

Dijon’s finest export - mustard aside - the prolific W!ld turns it out for Ralph Lawson’s 2020 with some predictably impressive results. Very sturdy gear.

QUICKIES Nico Purman

Art Of Memory 001 Art Of Memory 7.0

The first on Nico Purman’s own Art Of Memory imprint evokes Jan Hammer and Moroder in ‘Logan’s Dream’, with its spaced- out guitars and bulging synth work. It’s better than that sounds.

Tomson

Waiting EP Illusion Recordings 7.5

Manchester’s Tomson - aka Tom Lynch - breaks briefly from his We_Crtl label to throw down for Illusion. Four tracks here, including a John Dimas remix, all of which are totally useful.
