Come mid-September Waze & Odyssey will be hitting the States and Mexico for an eight date tour. “We’re really hyped to come over to you guys, we’ll definitely be eating lots of In-N-Out burgers along the way,” the house- friendly duo confirm. Highlights of their summer include gigs in Berlin, Moscow, London and Ibiza; and their forthcoming EP on Tsuba has already been given airing on Pete Tong’s show a whole month and a half prior to its release in October. They’ve been equally busy developing their own label W&O Street Tracks. “We’re building up this little family of friends like Ejeca, Citizen, Squarehead and Chamboche,” they explain. With releases also due on 20:20 Vision, Throne of Blood and their own label, W&O are hot to trot for the rest of 2013. Words: HELENE STOKES

The track that reminds you of your childhood? ODYSSEY: “Rebel MC’s ‘Street Tuff’. I learnt all the words and would dance around my room to it like a fool, but I still love this track today. I suppose it was my first adventure into electronic music.”

WAZE: “UNKLE’s ‘Psyence Fiction’. It’s an album I’ll never forget for lots of reasons and at the age of 15 it was also my welcome to the world of electronic beats.”

The first record that you ever bought? WAZE: “Weirdly it was New Order’s ‘World In Motion’. It was the official anthem for the England football (soccer) team when I was about 8! My mum probably bought it for me. I first properly got into vinyl at school through friends and ended up working in my local record shop part-time while at school and university. The owners were real house heads and it was amazing being able to have first choice on all the new stuff!”

ODYSSEY: “It was an awful, awful, badly produced muddy kick drum techno record that I can’t remember the name of from a store in Brighton. I remember being massively intimidated by the guys in there, so I probably just bought it through fear. It was white vinyl and really warped too so totally un-playable in a club. As it happens a few years later I ended up running a night with the guys from the store called Stompa Phunk. Really good times!”

The cheesiest record in your collection? ODYSSEY: “Technohead ‘I Wanna be a Hippy’. Erm, I went through a massive faze of this sort of shit, I was a big fan of happy house. There was a techno DJ called DJ Nicky from Brighton. She always played the Alley Cats Mix of ‘Charlie Says’ at plus 8 all the time too. Actually I’m sure 90% of the records in those days were played at +8.”

WAZE: “Tony De Vit ‘The Dawn (Paul Janes remix)’, I came up through an equally funny place musically! I heard this on a beach in Thailand and ended up buying it when I got home for the memories.”

The track that’s guaranteed to make you cry? WAZE: “Rob D ‘Clubbed to Death’. Pretty sure I had a tear in the eye as I drove home in the car listening to this after splitting with my very first girlfriend. It’s fair to say that it’s a pretty dramatic number and to this day I still love the track, though not necessarily with the tears!”

ODYSSEY: “Minnie Ripperton’s ‘Can You Feel What I’m Saying?’ - the unreleased live version. It’s just a brilliant record but I was going through a tough time with my girlfriend at the time and I suppose it has something to do with the notes she can reach and the crowd reacting in the background. Anyway I burst into tears. POW!”

An album that you’re currently into? WAZE: “Unknown Mortal Orchestra ‘II’. This is a bit of a traveling one for us. It makes us think of sunshine and California, which on a cold evening in London is a great thing. It sounds a bit like the album MGMT should have made.”

The record in your collection that you most treasure? WAZE: “Again, it’s the same answer from both of us on this one. Probably a release we did with a label that got pulled! There are only a few copies in existence but due to a problem with a track on the other side, it never saw the light of day. For the obvious reason I’m not saying which one!”

Your all time favorite track of all time? ODYSSEY: “Just impossible to answer and pointless too as it would take a week for me to decide and then I’d still end up changing my mind the week after.”

WAZE: “Yeah, I don’t think I could ever decisively say that I have a favorite track of all time, but I was reminded the other day how amazing James Holden’s remix of Nathan Fake’s ‘The Sky Is Pink’. It has to be one of my all time favorite club tracks and will definitely stand the test of time.”
