[ Focus: Certsure ]

ET: Electric vehicle charging is one growth area; what other business opportunities are you training contractors to meet? AC: Smart metering and home automation are two other areas where we are seeing good interest from contractors looking to diversify their businesses. We’ve partnered with Click Scolmore on home automation, and that’s proving successful. It’s still early days for the Green Deal, but we

think that energy assessment training is very much worth consideration, regardless of the Green Deal. Under the Energy Companies Obligation scheme, providers have to carry out an assessment prior to any installation work, so that is a viable market. If we start to see a market need, we carry out an

analysis to establish whether training is a viable and cost-effective option, and the likely demand for it. If we believe the signs are positive, then we can develop something, trial it and push it out there. We want to do that as far in advance of the

market need as possible. An example would be the new Level 3 electrical requirements, where we’ll try to work with the accrediting bodies, like EAL, to get a solution for contractors that may need training. SM: This is where the training department comes into its own. We can identify business opportunities and give firms the skills needed to fulfil these. A benefit of the creation of Certsure is to bring

Certsure training – best in class

With the joint venture between the ECA and the Electrical Safety Council and the creation of Certsure, the new training department widens the portfolio of courses available to electrical contractors. The ECA’s training team has now been brought together with that of the NICEIC to broaden the range of courses on offer to ECA members and contractors registered with ELECSA or the NICEIC. Certsure Training will run all of the courses on offer to firms under

the Electrical Safety Register umbrella, but the existing brands ECA, ELECSA and NICEIC will continue as normal. ECA members benefit from discounted prices over and above those registered with ELECSA or the NICEIC.

together all that expertise, get together with our industry partners to look at our proposition, and to improve that and to develop new courses. We don’t want to offer training for training’s sake. We want something to come out of it that is very practical and will show a return on investment. It’s either going to lead contractors into new markets, or further identify opportunities in existing markets where they can offer additional value to customers.
