[ Report: The Electric Event ] Maximum security

Presenting some of the latest developments in fire safety and security solutions, Eric Anderson from Siemens Infrastructure and Cities looked at building technologies that showed how integrated smart systems technology can provide increasingly sophisticated security systems.

He demonstrated the use of video analytics and Siemens’ Siveillance SiteIQ system as part of a fully-integrated energy management, fire safety and security system. Software video analytics provides tools that can help operators to be more effective when monitoring systems. Research has shown that an operator

watching a standard two-screen surveillance system can miss 45 per cent of scene activity after 12 minutes, and up to 95 per cent of what’s going on after 22 minutes. Software video analytics systems can identify not only if an intrusion has taken place, but what type of intrusion it is – whether a vehicle or a person – and attract the operator’s attention and inform them of its nature.

Meet the Suppliers exhibition and Technology Live workshops

T Inspiration time

Special guest speaker Ben Fogle delivered an inspirational speech to the business conference, as the TV presenter and adventurer described his career

and some of the astonishing challenges and experiences he has had since he first came to the public’s attention in the BBC reality ‘social experiment’ series Castaway. He described a life journey that took him

from being shy, unsporty and unacademic to a person who’s adventures include the gruelling week-long 180-mile Marathon des Sables run across the scorching Sahara desert, the epic 3,000-mile Atlantic Rowing Race in a 21-feet long boat with Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell, and an amazing expedition to the South Pole. Fogle enthralled the audience with a riveting and highly entertaining presentation. Underlying his story was a message about seizing opportunities, taking chances and making things happen. He certainly left delegates with plenty to think about.

he second day of The Electric Event was dedicated to two new elements of the refreshed conference format – the Meet the

Suppliers exhibition and an innovative series of Technology Live workshops – running in tandem within the ICC Birmingham complex. This part of The Electric Event was

open to one-day visitors as well as full conference delegates. It proved to be a popular move, with more than 1,000 people attending the event. More than 30 of the leading suppliers

to the UK electrical industry were among those exhibiting at the event, giving delegates the chance to speak face- to-face with key partners in the supply chain, get their hands on some of the latest products and information on new developments and services on offer. The exhibition, staged in Hall 4, was a popular part of the event, enabling exhibitors to interact with contractors, consultants, designers, specifiers and other attendees from across the building services industry. Some 35 individual Technology Live

workshop sessions, arranged under seven different ‘strands’, were timetabled throughout the day. The five workshops

in each strand from the morning session were repeated in the afternoon, allowing delegates flexibility in planning their days and enabling them to dip in and out of the exhibition. The workshops comprised half-hour presentations from leading manufacturers, industry figures and technical experts, providing insights and updates on the latest products, innovations, technologies and other key issues surrounding the industry. Summing up the event, David Kieft,

director of RDM Electrical Services, said: ‘The whole event was an absolute must for any electrical contractor, in particular the technology workshops and exhibition. I took a number of my customers who were amazed at what we can do and the kind of systems we can install for them. It provided a fantastic forum to do business and I will definitely be booking a place next year.’
