ROB SHEPHERD explains why building management systems (BMS) and building energy management systems (BEMS) should be at the top of the list of ways to optimise energy use and save money, and reviews the opportunities this burgeoning sector offers forward-thinking electrical contractors

ccording to the UK Green Building Council, the nation’s 1.8 million non- domestic buildings account for around 17 per cent of its carbon emissions. What’s more, in 2012 the Carbon Trust


reported that implementing innovative energy saving 28 ECA Today September 2013


measures represents a significant opportunity to help meet the UK’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets, as well as providing value through avoided energy costs, amounting to potential savings of 86Mt of CO2


and £13bn by 2050.
