The fi nal descent took us 17 hours, with my pulse rate running continuously at 120 bpm. This was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure and I couldn’t wait to see the amazing views at the top, but I am glad to be home.’ Paul was one of 30 trekkers who started out – although only 10

the John Peel stage. These vehicles were backed up by three tenders providing the cable and cameras, with power for the outside broadcast provided by Aggreko. Approximately 145kW was required in total for these vehicles to supply the equipment on board and power lighting and ventilation. The rigging of cables and cameras starts three to four days before
the festival begins, with hundreds of meters of power, audio and visual cable being laid and tested, connecting trucks to stages and to other trucks and then to uplink vehicles to allow the festival to be broadcast live to millions of TV viewers. It takes a staff of 60-70, which includes BBC production staff , Arena technical and camera staff and freelance operators to transmit coverage of this festival worldwide.
Farewell to Kevin Delaney
In January, Greater London’s former regional executive committee (REC) chairman and ECA council member Kevin Delaney took early retirement from his senior project manager’s position with Shepherd Engineering Services. To thank Kevin for all of his hard work and commitment to the
region over many years, the REC invited Kevin and his wife Janice to its July meeting. During the luncheon, new ECA president Phil Fagg, on behalf of the Greater London REC, presented Kevin and Janice with tokens of its appreciation. Kevin and Janice thanked the president and the region for ‘their kind gifts and a most enjoyable afternoon’. Kevin went on to say that he had
‘enjoyed all of his involvement with the Greater London region and the many friendships that he made’ and that he is already missing the camaraderie of such an involvement.

ECA South Wales region recently hosted an informative staff presentation at its Cardiff offi ces for member RCT Homes on the benefi ts of ECA membership. Key resources were highlighted, including the ‘Connect Your Colleagues Initiative’. ECA head of technical, Giuliano Digilio, attended the meeting and was involved in the staff briefi ng, looking at the company procedures and giving guidance and important technical support to attendees. ‘We had a situation where, although we were all following the
best practice guides, we needed the ECAs technical guidance to clarify certain issues,’ said Christian Jones, RCT Homes’ electrical compliance offi cer. Christian has now put together a detailed document for the
organisation. ‘We have used this document to educate our own electricians, as well as sub-contractors, so that we all work to the same standards,’ he said. ‘Everyone has raised their game, knowing that we have the support from the ECA. It has boosted morale and confi dence within our team, and I am very pleased with the outcome.’
