out a survey to identify any potential effi ciency savings. The ECA produces energy effi ciency checklists (see www.eca.co.uk) that can be used to assess any potential savings. The client can then directly engage the contractor to carry out the work without the hassle of the main Green Deal scheme. The ECA is working with Parity Projects and other

stakeholders to deliver a new small contractors’ cooperative called Retrofi tWorks. Paul Reeve, ECA director of Business Services, is a founder director, representing the interests of ECA building services contractors. The ECA sees Retrofi tWorks as a way for contractors of diff erent disciplines to gain and maintain access to the energy effi ciency and wider rerofi t market. A description of this scheme is detailed in the box on the right. The Green Deal and energy effi cient installations open up a new market for contractors, and the opportunity should be seized. There is little that is not within the competence of electrical contractors – and they could employ specialist assistance if required, such as in plumbing works for heat pumps or for additional insulation work. Whatever your route to market, customer demand for energy solutions is here to stay – take advantage of it.

RetrofitWorks: working together

What is Retrofi tWorks? Retrofi tWorks is a cooperative that will be owned by its members, and which is supported by the ECA. Its members are mainly small and medium-sized organisations that can deliver the assessment, design and refurbishment of buildings.

What does it do? Among other things, the cooperative will provide software that allows installers to compete and bid in the Green Deal/ECO, alternative fi nance and ‘able-to-pay’ retrofi t market. The software will provide installers with contract administration support and Green Deal or alternative retrofi t process management. It will also provide the ability to easily quote for new customers, using a pre- priced schedule of rates, generally removing the need to visit site. Once the client is engaged, members of the cooperative collaborate and work to a common delivery goal.

How does it benefi t contractors? Retrofi tWorks provides contractors (including electrical contractors) with the opportunity both for new work and to protect their current market, which could otherwise be aff ected by large Green Deal providers who can use economies of scale and off er a ‘one-stop service’ to customers. By being part of the cooperative, members are also able to provide a client with a one-stop, fl exible and competitive service, by collaborating with other co-op members.
