During a routine member service visit to Greater London member Bowers Projects, deputy regional manager Emma Burgess was shown newly installed 11kVA transformers at the Luton Airport site, part of a vast high voltage network that keeps the airport running. Bowers Projects is the high voltage service provider to London
Luton Airport, having been appointed to manage its high voltage network and to advise London Luton Airport Operations on eff ective solutions for the continued safe operation of the facility’s critical supplies. ‘The staff
employed by Bowers Projects supporting this contract have extensive experience on high voltage systems, which include design, construction and maintenance,’ said Ben Satur, Bowers’ project manager. ‘The team have wide-ranging knowledge of the airports – both high and low voltage systems – having worked on the maintenance and construction projects at the airport for more than six years.’ Working with the airport operations team, Bowers has
introduced new technology, bringing energy effi ciency opportunities to the airport’s high voltage systems with the introduction of low loss transformers and voltage optimisation.

Smarta scoops business award
Smarta Technology, an ECA member specialising in home automation technology, was recently named winner of the Western Mail Local Business Accelerators (LBA) competition, and is now one of the fi nalists for the national Local Business Accelerators award. Cardiff -based Smarta Technology – a member of the ECA
South Wales region – was formed in 2009 by managing director Mark Wray, and off ers domestic and commercial customers a high quality electrical and home automation service that enables homeowners to use digital technology for home automation and control, ranging from home entertainment and multi-room audio to heating, lighting and security systems. Mark, a qualifi ed civil engineer, launched the company after identifying a gap in the market for a home automation installer in South Wales and the South West of England. The company installs a range of integrated automation and control systems that enable customers to interact with domestic devices and equipment whilst at home – and remotely - via smartphones and tablet devices. The control and automation systems they install not only enhance the home entertainment technology experience, but also help to control energy usage. A new demonstration suite at Taylors Etc in Cardiff has recently been launched by Smarta Technology to showcase these smart home solutions. The success in the Western Mail Local Business Accelerators
(LBA) competition was a welcome surprise for Mark: ‘When we entered the competition it came as a complete shock when we made the fi nal three, so it is fantastic that we have won – and are now hoping that we can go even further in the competition.’ Mark continued: ‘The publicity around being a fi nalist really helped in terms of our brand awareness’. The national winner of the LBA competition, run by the
Newspaper Society, will be announced at a ceremony in London on 15 October. The overall winner will take home a prize package including mentoring from Dragons’ Den’s Deborah Meaden, a free local newspaper ad campaign designed by a top London agency, and £10,000 cash from the Business Growth Fund. The company has also just been awarded the Excellence in
Innovation Award at the National Chamber of Commerce in London, and has set an ambitious goal to become the UK’s largest commercial home automation installer by 2016.
