Ahead of her headlining performance at the Tatton Park Picnic Concerts, Katherine Jenkins opens up about her love for the troops and outside concerts

S

tanding out in a busy UK summer music programme of events, Tatton Park Picnic Concerts combine a stunning lakeside setting with world-class music

performances. It is only fitting therefore that Britain’s most famous mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins should top the bill on its final evening on Sunday 21st July 2013. “I am absolutely thrilled to be performing at this year’s Tatton Park Picnic Concerts,” says Katherine. “Te surroundings are truly stunning and I can’t wait to sing in the park. It will be an enchanting evening.” With the estate’s interesting history of music – the mansion boasts a dedicated music room with a 1789 harpsichord – Tatton Park is the perfect destination for a weekend of entertainment. Guests are even encouraged to bring their own picnics or enjoy one of the pre-prepared hampers available – much to Katherine’s delight. “Tese outside concerts are my favourite of the

year, as there is a lovely, informal atmosphere,” she says. “I feel that this is the way classical music should be enjoyed. Of course I love singing in concert halls, but I think that if you are not necessarily a concert-goer it can be intimidating to walk in to an opera house, whereas people really feel at ease in this kind of setting.” As part of the finale to the weekend, Katherine

will appear alongside the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Anthony Inglis. She will also be joined onstage by special guests the British classical group Amore. She says: “I personally feel, when people are

paying good money to come to a concert, it is important to give them the best concert you can. For me that involves having all live musicians on stage. I’ve been performing with the National

Symphony Orchestra from the beginning, so we’ve been performing together for nearly 10 years now. As a result, I know them incredibly well and it’s lovely to be able to perform with them regularly.” In addition to performing a selection of much-

loved last night classics such as Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory, Katherine will also be singing some of her favourite pieces including Les Filles de Cadiz, Someone To Watch Over Me and I Could Have Danced All Night. “I’ve been inspired by lots of different kinds of artists,” the award-winning singer says. “Maria Callas and Plácido Domingo inspire me opera-wise, while growing up it was the likes of Judy Garland, Doris Day, Marilyn Monroe and people with big voices like Barbara Streisand or Edith Piaf. “I’m definitely inspired by women,” she adds.

“I can’t wait to sing in the park. It will be an enchanting evening”

“My mum is also a big inspiration. She’s a very strong, independent woman and brought us up without my dad being around as he had passed away. I am really inspired by our troops too. I think that our men and women do such an amazing job away from their families for such a long time. Going out to sing to them in Iraq and Afghanistan has become a passion of mine and given me some of my best ever memories.” Prior to the Tatton Park Picnic Concerts,

Katherine will be joining Russell Watson and Katie Melua as part of Her Majesty the

Queen’s Coronation Festival Gala evening music programme. Te Gala concerts will be staged in the Gardens of Buckingham Palace for three consecutive nights between the 11th - 13th July. “I’m always touring at the moment,” she says,

“but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I love live performance and sharing a moment with the audience that will never be repeated somewhere else. I still get up in the morning and am excited about what I’m going to do, so I feel very lucky that people want to come and see me.” Katherine will also be touring in Asia later in the year, before performing Christmas carols in the Royal Albert Hall alongside the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Chorus and Te Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines in December. Fans will also be pleased to hear that another studio release may be in the pipeline too.

Katherine Jenkins will complete the spectacular line-up for the Tatton Park Picnic Concerts, which also includes Te Human League, on Sunday 21st July 2013. For tickets and information visit www.tattonparkconcerts.com
