This extra publication will cover the latest news from this part of the industry, and take a look at some of the
new products and solutions that can help electrical engineers to save time and money on-site.
Also this month we include features and product details on UPS & standby power, sensors & sensing systems, surge protection and industrial plugs & sockets. In addition, Newey & Eyre offer an insight into how changes to raw material prices have impacted on elec- trical professionals. Our cover story this month sees Schneider Electric champi- oning the role of e-learning in modern businesses, and the flexibility it can offer to enhance professional development. Joe Bush, Editor

The Green Deal - sleepwalking into obscurity?
PAUL REEVE, DIRECTOR of Business Services at the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), has expressed his concern over the future of The Green Deal. He said, “The Energy and Climate Change Committee’s report into the Green Deal is a wake-up call to government, which must keep on top of Green Deal performance if it is to prevent its flagship policy from sleepwalking into obscurity. “Now the Green Deal is live, the government must be quick to react to what is happening on the ground, and make changes if success is in doubt. Considering the PV FiTs fiasco was worsened by DECC rely- ing on outdated figures on solar installations, DECC should be accessing real time information on the Green Deal right now.
Birks of Eaton said, “We wanted to create an environ- ment that was informative as well as creative to give vis- itors the best Eaton experience. The venue is ideal for events such as customer visits and meetings, new prod- uct launches, press conferences and CPD seminars.”

into the multitude of product features and benefits, along with highlighting access to new mar- kets and business opportunities. For the big finale, attendees were put through their paces and asked to take total control with a F1 driving game. In addi- tion, the overall fastest time of the whole series of events took home a VIP trip to the European Grand Prix for two. Schneider Electric’s Tom France commented, “Following years of research, development and innovation, we are extremely proud to introduce our Acti 9 product. Unlike any- thing currently on the market, this product has the ability to single handedly transform con- trol and electrical distribution in modern commercial builds and will come as a major asset as we move towards a more sustain- able future.”

SENSORS & INSTRUMENTATION, a new, dedicated exhibition, con- ference and seminar programme, is taking place in Hall 3 at the NEC, Birmingham, on Wednesday 25th and Thursday 26th September 2013.
The free to attend show, organised by Datateam Business Media in partnership with Trident Exhibitions, combines the solid industry foundations cemented by previous shows - Sensing Technology and Sensors and Systems.
The exhibition will showcase sensors, test and measurement equipment along with a variety of other types of instrumenta- tion and will play host to a range of seminars aimed at pro- fessionals from areas including automation, calibration, cases and enclosures, condition moni- toring, and control systems.
Visitors to the show will also benefit from an exciting event co-location, providing easy access to nearby shows Micro | Nano | Mems 2013, The Machine Building Show 2013, TCT Live and Mediplas. Due to the significant overlap in tech- nology usage within these sec- tors, more visitors than ever are expected to attend the UK’s only event of this kind.
The National Physics Laboratory is also endorsing the event. Pete Moores, business development manager, NPL Training, said, “The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is pleased to be exhibiting and pre- senting at Sensors & Instrumentation 2013. It is a great opportunity for us to meet and network with all the key players in this sector at one event.”

JUNE 2013 Electrical Engineering
“The first figures on actual Green Deal installation work will be crucial. Depending on what these figures say, DECC may need to be ready with a Plan B.”
