Pierre Tuffigo outlines how Thales is providing civil and military operators with integrated CBRN detection


A


s CBRN threats increase across the world it is becoming essential for land forces and security units to implement effective and appropriate protective measures to ensure the safety of civil and military operators. Recent experience has


highlighted that there is oſten a gap between what is expected of CBRN systems and the reality of incident management and training exercises. Advanced information management systems and other key


technologies provide the detection, identification, early warning and response capabilities needed to protect friendly forces and local populations. The need for systems dedicated to CBRN detection, identification and crisis management extends well beyond the military domain into civilian situations, specifically designed to provide a comprehensive response to various user requirements. For 20 years, Thales has become well known for its CBRN systems integration expertise and has designed, manufactured and implemented integrated CBRN defence systems and services which address these issues in order to prepare and equip civil and army forces in any environment.


CBRN recce The battlefield environments which operators encounter can vary widely, from urban spaces to open desert, and thus require different capabilities. Operators can be required to move into areas contaminated by a CBRN agent, provide information on the risk level involved, take samples, transport them to specialized laboratories, and keep the authorities informed. developed a modular, open-system vehicle architecture to accommodate all the functionalities required for each customer’s operational scenario and vehicle deployment strategy. Depending on the tactical and geographical environment, the customer chooses the appropriate vehicle in which will be integrated specific transmission and key functionalities. Thales has provided several armed forces with different


types of military recce vehicle, including the VAB 4x4 for the French and Italian armies, the Patria 6x6 for the Finnish Army and the Piranha 8x8 for the Swiss Army. Embedded inside the armoured vehicle, the Thales CBRN Management soſtware suite collects and transmits all necessary CBRN hazard management data in order to ensure the safety of the crew and maintain full operational capability in any contaminated area. A full CBRN reconnaissance capability is provided, including biological identification integrated within the vehicle. Integrated vehicle solutions are not only required on the


battlefield; if civilian territory suffers a CBRN attack, security forces must be able to act in a safe and timely manner. In order to engage the best countermeasures, forces must be able to quickly identify and assess the threat. Once identified, commanders are able to engage precise and efficient countermeasures including: appropriate medical treatments, accurate forecasting of the contaminated area and specific decontamination procedures. Thales has developed a chemical and biological mobile


laboratory which can be deployed to maintain surveillance, analyse samples and inform authorities of any contamination. A Thales mobile laboratory is currently active within the
