USAF Emergency Management personnel approach a potentially contaminated area during an exercise at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, in 2009. They are using a First Defender APD 2000 and a Radiac. Air monitoring is one of the most important aspects of response in a potentially hazardous environment.
A HazMat responder checks out a portable propane tank in a crystal meth lab. These tanks are oſt en used to store anhydrous ammonia used in methamphetamine production. Oſt en hazardous and fl ammable vapours leak creating an explosive environment if a gun is fi red or other ignition source is nearby.

clandestine laboratory teams employ. These items could mean the diff erence between life and death, not only for the responders but, also for hostages, bystanders, and others! And Operational and Strategic level planners should be looking at that information and planning potential releases, explosions, and so on, and how those hazards may aff ect the surrounding area, the support area (Cold Zone), nearby populace and facilities, and more. The best approach to this is modelling based on the information known and suspected.
