hemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) units attached to the Swedish Armed Forces deal with CBRN threats and incidents, their principal roles being detection, identifi cation, surveillance, warning, reporting, physical protection and risk management.


The Swedish Army is equipped with a small number of Patria 6 x 6 Patgb 203 CBRN vehicles and its units are also registered with United Nations Standby Arrangements System (UNSAS) and the NATO/Partnership for Peace (PfP) Planning and Review Process (PARP) at 30 days notice, as well as with the EU, maintaining a high state of readiness.


Reach for the SkyddC The Swedish National CBRN Defence Centre, (SkyddC), located at Umeå in northern Sweden, is the centre of knowledge and excellence for Sweden’s Total Defence concept. The Centre is the lead authority for protection against CBRN incidents and covers everything from toxic chemicals to disease-spreading micro-organisms and ionising radiation. In addition SkyddC provides support for national and international preparedness and rapid response capabilities, and is also responsible for the establishment and training of specifi c CBRN units within the Swedish Armed Forces. SkyddC is also a lead developer of CBRN equipment and methods. At the CBRN school, which has a staff of 67 regular offi cers, 20 civilian employees and 22 army and navy personnel, training and exercising is provided for career offi cers, service units and other personnel from Sweden’s


emergency services. Skyddc is a member of the European


CBRNE Center research consortium consisting of Umeå University, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, the City of Umeå, Västerbotten County Council and the Swedish Fortifi cation Agency. The Centre initiates and coordinates research, training and education within the fi eld of safety and security, more specifi cally dealing with CBRNE materials.


RECCEX 12 SkyddC hosted the international Nordic CBRN Reconnaissance Exercise (RECCEX 12) that was conducted in the Umeå area late last year. The aim of the exercise was to increase the capability of managing CBRN activities in the local area, or in international operations through Nordic Defence Co-operation (NORDEFCO) collaboration. More than 230 personnel took part


in RECCEX 12. In addition to the Swedish CBRN company, military units from Denmark, Finland and Norway
