Protecting against today’s scenarios Apart from the traditional scenario of inter-state war, there has been a signifi cant increase in asymmetric threats in recent years. Non-conventional weapons and ROTA-incidents (Release Other Than Attacks) pose an unpredictable threat to the troops. In the event of a terrorist attack, when troops have minimal time in which to react, it is important to ensure that the appropriate protection is already in place and is fully eff ective in the moment of attack. This means that protection systems will potentially have to run for years, during the entire mission, if such threats are to be met successfully.
Platform endurance
With this background in mind, Beth-El Industries has found solutions to counter these challenges. The basic requirement was to develop an air-treatment system that can be operated continuously over a period of months or years in vehicles, as well as in mobile or fi xed infrastructure. Separate modules can be combined to cope with various threats and environments. The most important are: 1. Ventilation and dust fi ltration system module

This was accomplished through the
development, among others, of a new type of dust-separation stage which can separate very fi ne dust and ensuring the fi lters do not clog – so that even adverse pollution factors will not impede it. Furthermore, a new chemical fi ltration
stage has been developed by which the well-known problem of ‘ageing’ of fi lters has been signifi cantly reduced, thereby enabling continuous operation of the fi lter. In addition, this

chemical stage has proven capabilities against TICs that were previously impossible to fi lter out.
Fully protective From being a rather neglected topic, the hard realities of current operations has thrust force protection to the forefront of military concerns. It is now widely appreciated that it is a broader and more complex issue than had previously been understood. The topic will not go away; on the contrary, it seems set to dominate much of military thinking. Fuller consideration is now being given to developing a more coherent approach as well as how new technologies and techniques can signifi cantly enhance operational capabilities in the years to come. The traditional concept of a stand-off NBC fi ltration system, which would have been activated only on a certain alert level, has been replaced by a full environmental protection system with a full spectrum of capabilities – of which NBC protection is just one part. ❚❙
Traditional systems are handicapped by several inherent disadvantages that limit their operational eff ectiveness in such an environment:
Y Ageing of the fi lter: Due to reaction with humidity, the NBC-fi lter quickly loses its performance against traditional NBC warfare agents.
Y Limited performance against TICs: Many TICs used in the chemical industry today are not, or are only poorly, absorbed.
Y Clogged by sand and dust: In a desert area, traditional NBC fi ltration systems are oſt en clogged by sand and dust within a few hours.
Y No protection against hazards generated by platforms: Traditional systems cannot fi lter substances that exist inside vehicles while they are in operation, such as dangerous and toxic fumes generated by the fi ring of weapon stations.
