READER PANEL
Fast track to success
Run rather like speed dating, a Mentoring in a Minute evening at Sheraton on the Park was greeted with enthusiasm by Sydney AIOP members. After cocktails and canapés, NSW
divisional president Doreen De’Athe welcomed members to the professional development event, which was followed by a physical warm-up exercise to spark the brain (pictured). Members then lined up to have five- minute interviews with their preferred mentor. On the mentoring panel were Australian Hearing executive manager
Michelle Spooner, Metso learning and development manager Susan Brooks, education co-ordinator Jeannine Angilley, Australian hearing chief information officer Peter Gasparovic, and Westpac EA Patrizia Iacono.
Helping inspire students
Sponsored by AIOP (Queensland division) and the Cairns Business Liaison Association, CSIRO EA Vanessa Stott (AIOP 2012 Office Professional of the Year) spent three days speaking to business students.
In her own words... “I had the pleasure of visiting three
high schools in northern Queensland (Cairns State High, Smithfield State High and Malanda State High) over three days. It was a wonderful opportunity to speak to more than 300 business students from years eight to 12. “Each school had different requirements
and a different year-level focus, but the main purpose of my visits was to design and run workshops for senior students on ‘unlocking the key to career success’.
“With some of the younger students
I focussed on CV and interview preparation, and the importance of being motivated and setting goals. “I enjoyed immensely the opportunity
to share with the students some of my experiences and background, and it was incredibly rewarding and humbling to see the students so engaged and interested in what I had to say. “I would sincerely encourage other
EAs and PAs to get involved and engage when offered opportunities like this. Yes, it absolutely takes significant time and commitment in both preparation and presentation, but knowing that I was able to help inspire a new generation about what wonderful opportunities are available was unbelievably rewarding and an experience I will treasure always.”

Should your boss expect you to work on public holidays? If so, do you expect some kind of incentive?
Deb Turney The old double time and a half with lunch thrown in plus a bottle of vino when you catch up with your mates after work – at least!

Carly Grossek No, shouldn’t expect it. Incentives would be double time and a half plus a shorter day than normal. 26 March at 11:39 via mobile .

Ergonomic furniture…would you stand at your desk during your work day?
Victoria Norris I’d love stand-up hot desks/meeting zones to encourage quick action/agreements and keep meetings short … but I wouldn’t get rid of my sit- down desk. I have days where I am thank- ful to sit down and just churn out work.

Liz Baines: I don’t like sitting in office chairs for long periods, so I’d love a standing desk if I had a stool for when I get tired. I run around a lot during the day so standing would be easier for that.
