President’s Message and Board Dear Residents, Dear Residents,
On behalf of the Downers Grove Park Board of Commissioners, we are looking forward to all of the new and exciting activities taking place this spring and summer. The Park District Staff and Board are working together on a Strategic Plan facilitated by consultants from Face to Face Communications. Focus groups have been scheduled throughout April and early May with community representatives, inter-governmental groups and local businesses. If you haven’t already, please take time to participate in one of these groups to communicate what you think the Park District does well, where it can do better, and where you’d like to see it go in the future. This is a great way to share your opinions! Dates, times and locations of these focus groups can be found on the District’s website. After the community input process, the staff and board will work with consultants to formulate the vision for the District. We are really excited to see where this process leads us!
My fellow Commissioners and I are also welcoming a new Park Board Commissioner, Damienne Souter. I know she is eager to begin to serve our residents in this capacity and we look forward to all that she has to contribute to the Park Board. Please feel free to reach any of the Park Board Commissioners with suggestions, concerns or general communications by email listed at the bottom of this page and on the Park District website.
If you haven’t already been to the Lincoln Center in the recent past, you will notice a few changes. The most significant is the Registration Office location is now in the main lobby. The office has been relocated to the entry level lobby to better serve everyone visiting the Lincoln Center. The relocation is also in response to the increased need of security for the Lincoln Learning Center Preschool students within the building.
The Park District has also planned a summer packed full of exciting special events. Fishel Park will host several of these, including 12 Family Concerts on Tuesday evenings, and new this year, are two Movies in the Park and the Chilympics Chili Cook-off. See page 6 for details on these fantastic family events!
I’d like to close by congratulating the Park District Staff and Green Committee for earning the Earth Flag from the SCARCE Organization. The Park District has demonstrated its commitment to the environment through the adoption of district-wide environmental guidelines and several environmentally-friendly operational initiatives and projects. Look for the Earth Flag displayed at Park District facilities this summer!
Sincerely, Bob Gelwicks, Park Board President Board of Park Commissioners

The Downers Grove Park District was created in 1946 as a special unit of local government when a group of citizens envisioned the establishment of a park and recreation system to serve area residents. The Park District’s mission is to provide a wide variety of year-round recreation programs, facilities, parks, open space and natural areas that respond to the articulated needs and desires of residents.
