HO scale layout. As regular readers know, Bob’s been involved in the hobby for a long time. His first article was published in RMC in 1969 and soon af- ter he joined the staff on a part time ba- sis. (He full time job was as a teacher.)

Although Bob and his wife relocated to upstate New York a few years ago, he still makes the trip down to our office about once a month and, with his many years of experience as a modeler, histo- rian and well-traveled railroad enthusi- ast, we’ve come to rely on his knowledge and judgement. So, when he came in one day raving about a D&H-themed layout he had seen–it ran flawlessly, looked remarkably like the area being modeled and the operating crew includ- ed some former D&H employees who kept things pretty lively and realistic– we knew that it must be good. After seeing Kip’s layout firsthand, Bill and I had to agree with Bob. It was obvious that Kip had put a lot of thought and time into studying the area he chose to model and his execution was superb. The layout room was neat and clean. The corners of the room were coved– making for a nice backdrop, and the layout was trimmed with a dark fascia and valance. Beyond that, though, it’s the little things that make the layout seem so right. The light gray ballast was typical of that used on the D&H, as
