ture. The American Association of Rail- roads (AAR) assigned these cars with mechanical designation class GBSR. They were referred to as cushion-coil cars and usually had removable steel covers to protect the load from the ele- ments. New coiled steel was initially shipped in modified gondola cars fitted with removable covers to protect the steel from the weather. Starting about 1965 purpose-built cars were designed and built for this type shipment by a number of companies including Na- tional Steel Car (NSC), Evans, Portec, US Railway Equipment, Thrall and Greenville Steel Car. These purpose- built cars were usually equipped with sliding-sill underframes to absorb en- ergy during coupling and during tran- sit, thereby protecting the car’s struc-

Between 1994 and 2007 National Steel Car (NSC) in Hamilton, Ontario manufactured steel coil cars of a com- mon design with distinctive fishbelly side sills. The cars were built with inte- rior trough lengths of 34′-0″, 42′-0″ and 48′-0″. The prototype NSC-built cars represented by the Atlas model have a 42′-0″ interior trough length, 47′-2″ length over strikers, 34′-5″ truck cen- ter spacing and 15″ end-of-car cushion- ing. The cars, with a capacity of 104 tons on 100-ton trucks, can accommo- date steel coils ranging from 30 to 84 inches in diameter. A one-piece dome- style, removable steel cover protects the steel coil load from the weather. NSC built more than 17,000 of these
