Railroading on the D&H Sonnyvale branch

WILLIAM SCHAUMBURG

The Jasperdale GLF Co-op is about to re- ceive a carload of feed. The morning sun highlights the new D&H “lightning stripe” scheme which first appeared on the road’s new RS-11’s. RS-2’s all sport the new look and now RS-3’s are emerging from the paint shop at Colonie in blue and gray.

which prompts Bill to announce that so and so is doing “long division.” Even though, as in real life, the

branch to Sonnyvale is entirely within yard limits, the crew is mindful that a scheduled train, passenger local No. 161, will be heading up the branch at 7:40 a.m. Thus, any switching move that requires venturing out onto the branch needs to be timed accordingly. We’ve been reminded that the passen- ger crew would not look kindly on a de- lay and that someone would likely have some explaining to do. When our train is made up and the passenger local has passed, we depart Junction Yard and head onto the branch. Crossing a stream, the engi- neer gives a couple of toots to the John- son twins, who are already out sunning themselves.
