D&RGW prototypes and I was in- trigued by them. While intrigued, though, I was still far from making any purchases of my own, for the models were just a bit too large for my liking. I am an N scale modeler,

searching the Soundtraxx website for Tsunami sound decoder-related infor- mation, I found myself clicking the “Blackstone Models” button. At that moment my modeling focus shifted and I was hooked on HOn3. Blackstone Models is a division of Soundtraxx and therefore benefits from all of the technical advances in their DCC, sound and lighting technol- ogy. In addition to these features, Blackstone Models equipment is as good as any brass equipment that I have seen. Unwavering fidelity to the prototype is something that Black- stone Models has become known for. Their equipment features extremely fine operating characteristics and is

the total package when it comes to HOn3 modeling. They really have raised the bar when it comes to ready- to-run models.

The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad had a modest fleet of passen- ger cars that were purchased new from Jackson and Sharp Company in the early 1880’s. These cars were modified physically throughout the years and were still in service in the 1950’s. Ini- tially, the paint scheme on the cars was a Tuscan color with gold leaf lettering. Around 1918 most of the fleet was re- painted Pullman Green with gold leaf lettering. In the mid-twenties the use of gold leaf lettering was dropped in fa- vor of yellow paint. Fortunately, a few of these cars survive today and are in excursion service. Car No. 320 is from the three-pack that Blackstone Models is offering rep- resenting the “Chili Line” coaches. These coaches ran on the Chili line through the

1930’s until the line’s

abandonment in 1941. One spotting feature of these Chili line coaches was the bay window that was located on each side of the coach. The Chili line trains featured a mixed consist (pas- senger cars mixed with freight cars) but a caboose was not used. This pre- sented a problem for the conductor of the train. The conductor could not look over the train while in motion. The D&RGW solution was to add these bay windows which would allow the con- ductor to look over the train from each coach.

This car is everything that you
