on hand completed the model’s assem- bly.
Our model was finished with an overall coat of Brunswick Green as rec- ommended in the kit’s instruction and the provided quality decals were used. Illustrations of the Maine Central let- tering was not provided in our version of the kit instructions so the positions were guessed at based on reviewing a number of Maine Central freight car photos taken from 1910 to 1920. Later access to a Laconia Car Company builder’s photo proved that the decora- tion on our finished model was in the general ball park.
Northeastern Scale Lumber’s newest kit is up to today’s technologi- cal standards for accuracy and overall detail. This is in no small way due to the knowledge and forethought of the designers. This model was quickly built and finished to yield an accurate, interesting and unique piece of rolling stock with all the hallmarks of the pro- totype. The price of the kit is $45.00.—GEORGE RILEY
Scrap metal load: HO scale Mfd. by Motrak Models, 5645 Pope
Street, Hope Mills, NC 28348; see
www.motrakmodels.net
Motrak Models sells a realistic load of scrap metal to fit into HO gondolas with a 40-foot interior length. Many types of inserts representing loads of coal, ore and stone have been offered to place into open top gondolas and hop- per cars. This load by Motrak realisti- cally represents a load of rusted scrap metal. It consists of a Hydrocal base covered with real metal shavings painted in a rust color. The load measures 39′-1″ long, 8′-4″
wide and 4′-4″ tall and adds one ounce of weight to the gondola. If a higher load is desired, pieces of
plastic or
wood can be placed under the load to raise it higher in the gondola. Motrak advertises the load is appro- priate for HO scale gondolas by Round- house and Athearn, but it would fit most gondola models with a 40-foot in- terior length. It may be necessary to file a little off the sides or ends of the load for it to fit easily into some model gondolas.
The Motrak scrap metal load, part number 8707-8M, is listed at $7.95 each.—JOHN RIDDELL
