a number of HO scale craftsman rolling stock kits. After over a decade- long hiatus, the company has just re- leased a totally new kit that consists of laser-cut plywood, metal and plastic detail parts as well as three strips of basswood (for the roof walk). This is a departure from the previous “box of sticks” kits of the past. The laser-cut parts make for an easy-to-build, accu- rate model that even a novice can as- semble successfully. Trucks and cou- plers are not supplied as has been traditional with nearly every crafts- man type rolling stock kit.


The Northeastern model is the first model ever offered that replicates an Eastman heater car. When built in De- cember of 1912 by the Laconia Car Company of Laconia, New Hampshire, the prototype car was assigned to the Maine Central. The original car utiliz- ing double-sheathed wood construction was mounted on a riveted steel under- frame that at the time was the pinna- cle of technology and a then new process at the Laconia car works. There is some conjecture that the car body was insulated, however, at this time no documentation has been locat-


ed to prove or disprove this assump- tion. The only defining items that sepa- rate the heater car from the many 36- foot long sliding door, double-sheathed house cars of the period is a small ex- haust vent on the B end roof and a heater box mounted under the floor on the opposite side from the brake cylin- der.


Assembling the Eastman heater car kit is very straight forward. The laser kit parts are precise and tabbed to fit exactly in proper alignment and posi- tion. Due to this feature, it would be difficult to incorrectly assemble this model. Even the grab iron mounting holes are laser bored and only need to be cleaned out with a No. 78 bit. While the underbody brake detail is minimal, with only the K brake cylinder provid- ed, a full rigging can easily be added should the builder wish to the add the additional details using after market parts. Otherwise, the model is well de- tailed with a full complement of indi- vidual grab irons, ladders and other added detail parts.
