Burlington Northern purchased

NSC coil cars with shorter 34′-0″ troughs, while the Grand Trunk West- ern purchased some with longer 48′-0″ troughs.

A 48-page reference book on coil cars built by NSC is available: NSC Coil- Steel Freight Cars, by David Casdorph at www.createspace.com/3840267. NSC has a link, www.steelcar.com, that in- cludes information on the coil cars, in- cluding drawings,

specifications and

builders photos. In 1999 and 2000 Tomahawk Rail-

way purchased 275 coil cars from NSC, numbered 601000 to 601274. The re- view model is lettered for TR, the Tom- ahawk Railway, a subsidiary of rail op- erator Genesee & Wyoming Inc. which owns many rail operations. The origi- nal G&W Railroad was a common car- rier, six-mile short-line headquartered in Retsof, New York, that served most- ly salt mining and processing opera- tions. It expanded by acquiring local rail lines from CSX that were consid- ered surplus. TR served locations with many types of traffic using a roster of cars including auto racks, coil cars and intermodal cars. A recent ready-to-run model offered

by Atlas represents a modern 42-foot car for carrying steel coils. It features see-through walk platforms, removable hood, interior trough detail, accurate cut levers and AccuMate couplers. The trucks have blackened metal 36″ wheel sets. The couplers and trucks are se-

cured by Phillips screws.

The removable hood of the model has factory-applied, stand-alone grab irons and a handrail all around. The hood fits snugly, but it can be removed by carefully holding the side sills below the walks with one hand while using an index finger and thumb on one end of the cover above the handrails to tug up one end a little. The cover is secured by the ridge on the top of the body and the inside of the bottom of the cover. Nothing else holds it. A stacking frame is attached to the top of the hood to en- able multiple hoods to be stacked when removed from the cars. The removable hood is lettered for ADS Inc., a pipe manufacturer.

A metal weight is fixed inside the

hood, giving the model a weight of four ounces. The paint and lettering is su- perb with even the distinctive NSC builders logo accurately represented. In the bottom of the box containing the model is a plastic bag containing two interior braces and two brake air hoses that can be optionally installed by the modeler.

In addition to the Tomahawk Rail-

way model reviewed, Atlas offers these coil cars decorated as follows: Canadi- an National (gray/black/yellow/, Grand Trunk Western (brown/white/yellow/, Laurinburg & Southern Railroad (gray/red/blue/yellow), Providence & Worcester RR (gray/black/white/yel- low), South Shore Freight (maroon/or- ange/white). An undecorated model is
