It’s show time!


Las Vegas’ spectacular shows are legendary. King of the Strip is Cirque du Soleil,


which opens its eighth production in the desert resort in May. As yet untitled, the new show at Mandalay Bay will feature the music of Michael Jackson.

The vast hotels on the Strip are attractions in themselves, with gimmicks ranging from


an erupting volcano to a replica of the Eiffel Tower. The biggest draw is the dancing fountains at Bellagio, where 1,200 jets of water play to music.

October, this year’s fi gures are set to rise again. “The UK is the number one source of overseas


visitors to Las Vegas,” says Russell Meara, UK Sales and Marketing Account Director for the city’s convention and visitors authority. “There has never been a better time to visit Las


Vegas as it’s more accessible than ever, with 20 direct fl ights a week from the UK.” While the global economic crisis has slowed


down hotel development in the past few years, many of the resort’s best-known properties have embarked on major renovations. Those undergoing multi-million-dollar facelifts this year include Bellagio, Bally’s and The Palms. Prime attractions to have opened in the last year include the Mob Museum, which presents a bold view of organised crime’s impact on Las Vegas, and the Neon Museum, which hosts a collection of more than 150 vintage Vegas neon signs. The latest big name to headline on the Strip is


country singer Shania Twain, who recently kicked off a two-year residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Comedy star Roseanne Barr has also opened a new show at the Laugh Factory Las Vegas at the Tropicana Hotel. The city’s exciting restaurant scene continues


to set trends. Latest additions include Andrea’s, which combines a stylish restaurant and nightclub at Encore at Wynn Las Vegas. The desert resort’s long list of attractions, from thrill rides to celebrity hangouts, means there is plenty of scope for agents to maximise their commission potential by selling add-ons. “Grand Canyon experiences and Vegas shows are the most popular options,” says Gail Dunwoodie, Head of Trade Product and Marketing at Attraction World. Three new excursions being offered by Attraction World highlight the breadth of Las Vegas’ appeal: a sightseeing trip combining the city with the desert, a luxury bus tour of Zion National Park and a day trip to Hollywood.
